Funky Chillin’ On A Sunshine Afternoon

Image
Pixabay Let’s just chillout on a sunshine afternoon, to paraphrase the song by Collage! 😊 The new EP by Glam Sam & His Combo marks the beginning of a new chapter for both Glam Sam (Mats Samuelsson) and singer Angelina. A few months ago, Mats came across Angelina’s soulful vocals while listening to the debut album from the Monks Road Social project. With tracks featuring artists like Dr. Robert of The Blow Monkeys and Mick Talbot of The Style Council, he was instantly struck by Angelina's voice, particularly in the song Golden Day which she had co-written with Miles Copeland. After hearing it, Mats was eager to connect with her: “I reached out to Angelina straight away. Her voice just bowled me over. It's so cool and unique. I just had to work with her.” Two years ago, the composer Skinshape met the young Brazilian talent Pedro Mizutani. From this chemistry comes a collaboration where the burning sands of Rio blend with the icy bricks of London. Their first EP, released a ...

Latin Moves From Old Grooves

Image
Unsplash Enjoy familiar songs in a comfortable Latin jacket. The warm sounds fit these warm days of summer šŸ˜Ž   Probably the first one who made Latin versions of well-known songs was German composer, musician and producer Uwe Schmidt, also known as SeƱor Coconut. Meant to be rough sketches, Uwe Schmidt started to program a couple of Kraftwerk cover versions in traditional cha-cha-cha arrangement and decided to make this the second SeƱor Coconut album. Entertained by the result of the first recordings, he produced a total of 4 songs which he sent to some record companies. One of those, Tōwa Tei's Akashic Records, immediately licensed the album, entitled El Baile AlemĆ”n , releasing it upon completion of the production in 2000. Uwe Schmidt obtained official permission by Kraftwerk themselves to release the album, though had to remove his version of Radioactivity . European and North American record companies remained uninterested until triggered by the hype El Baile AlemĆ”n had c...

Smooth Sailing Summer Trip

Image
C-Heads Magazine Enjoy this fresh smooth sailing summer trip! 😊 Sand In Your Shoes by Al Stewart from his classic album Year Of The Cat only became a hit only in South Africa: "I was convinced this would be the single. I went to the record company and said, 'Please release 'Sand In Your Shoes' as the single.' And they did... in South Africa. It was a hit in South Africa but it was not a hit anywhere else in the world. This was the beginning and the end of my ability to pick singles. I still think in some parallel universe this is a hit." (Al Stewart) Released in March 1977, Easy by The Commodores reached number one on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart and number four on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is a slow ballad about a man's emotions at the end of a relationship. Lionel Richie sings that he is not depressed about the break-up and claims that he feels "easy like Sunday morning". Jonathan Coulton did a good job to sound exactly like ...

Far Away Places: A Funky Chillout Experience

Image
Pexels Yesterday a lot of snow fell in my hometown of Groningen and this cold weather inspired me to create something warm 😊 Enjoy! In Heaven Magazine the enigmatic Cosmic Crooner tells about his upcoming second album: “Last summer was a beautiful time. I recorded a lot of material with legendary musicians in the dunes near The Hague. For those songs I was inspired by jazz and progressive soul by Curtis Mayfield, among others. But what I especially listened to and was captivated by was Brazilian music. That makes my new material feel like a big sultry summer evening.” Next week we are going from far away places back to California for a new part of Sunny Breeze From The West Coast ! Tracklist: Burt Bacharach – Touch (1981) Cosmic Crooner – Never Wear Your Own Merch (2024) Everything But The Girl – One Place (1991) Raffi Quijano – Baby Come Back (2008) Bellestar – Best Of My Love (2016) Sarah Menescal & Eve St. Jones – Break My Heart (2023) Mina Okabe – Maybe One Day (2024) Cl...

Chillout In A Warm Latin Breeze

Image
Ahmet Cotur Enjoy familiar songs in a comfortable Latin jacket. Warm sounds for warm days! 😊 One of the first bands that recreated classic songs in a Latin arrangement was Nouvelle Vague. Their name, "new wave" in French, referred to the new wave music that they covered and to the French New Wave cinema movement of the 1960s. They often reworked songs in a “bossa nova” style, which means "new wave" in Portuguese. Explaining how the project came about, band member Olivier Libaux later told the BBC: "Marc Collin and I were both musicians and producers in the French music industry when, in 2003, Marc called me with this very strange idea of covering Love Will Tear Us Apart in a bossa nova version. I thought this idea was absolutely crazy but very exciting. So we decided to get into the studio and try it out as soon as possible." Olivier Libaux passed away in 2021. Next up is a Mixcloud Exclusive for subscribers, followed by part 7 of Sunny Breeze From The ...

After The Sun: A Funky Chillout Experience

Image
Unsplash Enjoy these tracks that are meant for the days that you wish it was a little cooler… 😊 I chose to play a chillout mix of Spiller’s Groovejet by Breakbot & Irfane that came out two years ago. The initial instrumental version of the song was first played in a Miami based club, called Groove Jet, later Sophie Ellis-Baxtor was asked to add vocals on it. Cristiano Spiller told British newspaper The Guardian: “This was one of the fastest tracks I ever produced. It was 1999, the night before I was due to fly to Miami for the Winter Music Conference, where all aspiring DJs and producers went. I was trying to stay awake for my early-morning flight and put on an unreleased version of Carol Williams’ Love Is You. I ended up sampling it and, in a couple of hours, I had Groovejet more or less written.” Tracklist: Emma Hoet & Molitor – SucrĆ© SalĆ© (2024) Bonus Points – Life At Sea (2016) Kenneth Bager Feat. Findlay Brown – Stones And Steel (2019) Sweatson Klank – Kiss In The Sh...

Funky Chillout Sunshine Session

Image
Ron Lach We all need some sun in these dark days of December, enjoy! 😊  The song by Patti Labelle is from the outstanding compilation album Yacht Soul 2 . The other two best compilation albums of 2023 are, to my humble opinion, Tribal Rites Of The New Saturday Night (Brooklyn Disco 1974-5) , which contains the Al Foster Band track, and Disco Giants 18 , which I played tracks from earlier. American Gypsy are best known for their song Inside Out , which has been sampled by DJ Shadow, Jazzanova, Groove Armada and others. The band began club performances in Los Angeles in 1971, followed by a two-year tour of Spain. Because of the language advantage the group settled eventually in The Netherlands in the mid-1970s. The line-up then was: Joe Skeete (bass guitar), Michael Hamane (lead guitar), Lorenzo Mills (vocals), Richard James aka Ricardo James (drums), David Harrell (vocals, guitar, sax, flute) and Steve Clisby (vocals, keyboards). During their American period, individual members rec...

Funky Chillout Night Session

Image
Pexels Enjoy the “quiet storm” mood of this funky chillout night session! The track by Esther Phillips is from the new Too Slow To Disco compilation Yacht Soul 2 . To be honest, I think the term yacht soul is quite ambiguous and most of the times it is used to play pure soul or disco tracks, like Shalamar, which has nothing to do with the original concept of yacht rock at all. The term has become blurry, if there is no “yacht” connection. However, DJ Supermarkt has found that connection by selecting soul covers of well-known yacht rock songs: “The pure Yacht Rock fans sometimes don’t appreciate the black music part. That’s why I never used that expression on our compilations, instead went for Yacht Pop. To me that integration of soul, jazz, funk is the essence of the part of YACHT music I like. That soulful vibe was already all over the other TOO SLOW TO DISCO compilations. So for me it wasn’t a big step. But for some it is….” (DJ Supermarkt / Westcoastsoul.de) On February 2, 2024 th...

Funky Chillout “Lazy Breeze” Session

Image
Pexels We’re chilling out like a lazy breeze. Enjoy this new funky chillout session ! 😊 The track by Glam Sam & His Combo is brand new. A follow-up single is on its way! “Soulful and psychedelic, the haunting melodies of Club Level float above a steady strutting rhythm section, punctuated by moaning baritone saxophone and drenched in washy reverb.” (Bandcamp) Tracklist: Lexsoul Dancemachine – Lazy Breeze (2022) 79.5 – Club Level [Eli Escobar Remix] (2022) Glam Sam & His Combo – Lost In The Art World (2023) Sunset Rollercoaster – Coffee’s On Me (2021) Carol Welsman – What A Fool Believes (2007) Parthenope – Don’t Know Why (2022) Nekta – Hot Stuff (2010) Twennynine With Lenny White – Slip Away (1980) Creme D'Cocoa – Leading Lady (1978) Sam Green & Scherrie Payne – You Are (1989) Joe Thomas – Let Me Be The One (1979) Odyssey – Battened Ships (1972) Young Gun Silver Fox – Moonshine (2023) Marlena Shaw – Feel Like Making Love (1976) Laure Briard – The Smell Of ...

Friday Night Bath Music: Sophisti-Pop, Yacht Rock & Slow Disco

Image
Craig Adderly Music that makes you feel good on a Friday Night, not necessarily on the dance floor, but more particular in your own bath tub 😊Enjoy! Last week I played two tracks from the 4th instalment of Too Slow To Disco , by far the best compilation of 2022. This week I selected another one, Tell Me The Reasons Why by Max Leake. On the album there is also a track by Severin Browne, Stay . In the liner notes it is said that he was "the first ever white artist to be signed to Motown Records." This is not true, of course. There were quite a few white artists employed by Motown before him, like Meatloaf, Tommy Good, Frankie Valli, R. Dean Taylor, the band Rare Earth and female artists like Chris Clark, Kiki Dee and Debbie Dean. Say Lou Lou are beautiful twin sisters Miranda and Elektra Kilbey. They are the daughters of singer Steve Kilbey. front man of Australian band The Church, known for their eighties hit Under The Milky Way . Say Lou Lou’s new single, Waiting For A...

Funky Chillout Airplane Session

Image
Unsplash Fasten your seatbelts, sit back, relax and enjoy this funky chillout airplane session! Midnight Plane To Houston , a song about Hollywood actress Farrah Fawcett, was the original title of the soul classic Midnight Train To Georgia . When Cissy Houston (mother of Whitney) wanted to record it, songwriter Jim Weatherly was asked if she could sing about a midnight train to Georgia. Her audience did not take planes to Houston. Weatherly did not mind, and certainly not after Gladys Knight's cover version, which went to number one a year later. Gladys Knight & The Pips had already scored a number 2 hit with Neither One Of Us , also a Jim Weatherly song. Tracklist: Bossasonic – Amazing Flight / Club Tropicana (2008) Sunset Boulevard Project – Fly Like An Eagle (2019) Bad Colours – Maybe I Should Move To L.A. (2022) California Flight Project – California Flight (1979) Kim Carnes – Bon Voyage (1985) Peter Allen – Fly Away (1980) Mascara (Feat. Luther Vandross) – See You I...

Funky Chillout Evening Session

Image
Kai Dahms If there's one song that sounds like a warm summer breeze, then it's Avant De Nous Dire Adieu by American model, singer, and actor Jeane Manson  After being photographed for Playboy magazine in 1974, she moved to France and appeared in several movies. In the summer of 1976 Avant De Nous Dire Adieu reached #12 in the Dutch Top 40. The song is featured on this cloudcast. Earl McGrath had the honour to discover Daryl Hall and John Oates in the early 1970s. According to Light In The Attic on Bandcamp, McGrath was the ultimate jet setter, an art collector and comic bon vivant who incidentally stumbled in the record business. In 1970 Atlantic founder Ahmet Ertegun gave him his own label, Clean Records. After his death in 2016, some of the demos he had recorded were literally found in a closet. Mark Rodney’s California, which is on this cloudcast, was one of them. Enjoy this funky chillout soundtrack to sundown!  Tracklist: Thundercat – Fly Like An Eagle (2022) ...

Funky Chillout Poolside Session

Image
Unsplash Enjoy this funky chillout "cool in the pool" session!😊 The track by Cash & Carry is from the brand new compilation Super Hits Of The 70s , out on Numero Group: "The ninth installment in Numero’s Cabinet of Curiosities is 100% chart smashes. Culled from the depths of the private press, Super Hits gathers 12 magical adaptations from the Me Decade’s introspective songbook." (Bandcamp) The closing track is Disco L'Africain by Dutch band Chica Chica. They are inspired by cumbia, psychedelia and disco grooves. According to themselves, the song is "the perfect soundtrack to go on a midnight adventure." Next up is a new part of Smooth Sailing ! Funky Chillout Sofa Session: Nice & Slow

Image
Pixabay The Italian disco group The Salsoul Invention from producer Anoub, can easily be mistaken for The Salsoul Orchestra from vibraphonist Vince Montana Jr. (formerly of MFSB). The names are very similar and their only LP, Salsoul Explosion , released back in 1976, covers some Salsoul Orchestra classics, like Nice 'N' Naasty , Salsoul Hustle and Get Happy . But The Salsoul Invention also recorded tracks form Anoub himself and did a very pleasant version of Jesse Green’s Nice And Slow . Enjoy this funky chillout sofa session ! Funky Chillout “Summer Breeze” Session

Image
Taylor Simpson How do you call this kind of music? Well, I name it “funky chill”, but I suppose “smooth jazz”, “mellow soul” or “folk funk” might fit the bill as well. Enjoy this warm summer breeze during cold winter days! 😊 Love The One You’re With by Stephen Stills (Crosby, Stills & Nash) was released as the lead single from his debut self-titled album in November 1970. The song, inspired by a remark Stills heard at a party from Billy Preston, became his biggest hit single, peaking at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1971. Several cover versions have since been released. The most famous one came from the Isley Brothers, whose unique gospel-driven version of the song sent it to the charts again reaching #3 R&B and #18 pop, giving the group their fifth US top 40 pop single. Nowadays Ronald and Ernie Isley still perform as The Isley Brothers. Last year they released Friends And Family, accompanied by a great video. Tracklist: Meeka Kates – Laredo (2022) The Reflections...

Chillin’ Out On Board Of The Floating Hotel

Image
Haim & Taylor Swift Welcome on board of the floating hotel! This mix is slightly different from the ones I usually make. My intention was to put together a chill wave mix, but I threw in some yacht rock and funk as well. In the end it has become quite eclectic. I hope you will enjoy! When Jeremy Spencer left Fleetwood Mac overnight to become a member of a Christian sect, guitarist Bob Welch replaced him and played on several albums during the first part of the 1970s. After Mick Fleetwood had asked the duo Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to join the band, Welch started a solo career. He made some well-received albums until 1983, but sales steadily declined and he eventually became a songwriter in Nashville. During the 1980s he had to cope with a serious drug addiction. In 1994, he filed a lawsuit against Fleetwood Mac, claiming he was underpaid royalties during his employment. The case was settled out of court, but Welch stated that Fleetwood Mac took revenge by having him...

Final Funky Chillout Hammock Session

Image
Pixabay Although autumn has officially started, it’s still warm in the Netherlands. This gives me the opportunity to upload one last funky chillout hammock session. Enjoy! Without any doubt Isaac Hayes helped shaping the music of the 1960s and 1970s. After laying the fundamentals for the Memphis soul sound through his work with Stax-Volt Records as a producer and songwriter, Hayes began a highly successful solo career. When he released Theme From Shaft in 1971, he predated not only the disco movement, but also the evolution of rap. I chose to play a song from later in his career, Life's Mood II . Next up is part 41 of Eddy's 80s Grooves ! Tracklist: Carl Hudson & Galactic Gunslingers – It All Began Underwater [Soulpersona Mix] (2021) Four80East – Tikitango (2015) Motel Club – La Plage (2021) Till Brƶnner & Bob Jame s – On Vacation (2020) Weekend – Summerdays (1982) Isaac Hayes – Life's Mood II (1995) Dee Dee Sharp Gamble – See You Later (1980) Anvil Band – I’...
