If Stevenage had a sound, then this would be it; Discordant and Disjointed just like the council estates that make up England's first New town. It's from here, a place where “nothing happens except nothingness” that Bad Breeding come from, they have been described in some quarters (NME and The Guardian) as “The Best New Punk Band in Britain.” but hey who believes what they read in the press? Never mind that, take it from me Bad Breeding are something special, a band taking a stand and doing things their way on their terms, this is no corporate cock sucking retro bullshit; this is the now. Bad Breeding’s self titled debut album is a stark statement of intent, a Punk Rock symphony in sixteen parts, a soundtrack to closing factories and steel mills, celebrity culture and aspirations in a divided unequal society run by a government whose moral compass is pointing nowhere. It is a state of the nation address to a nation in a state, where things need addressing. It is the sound of the gory days of 1980's Thatchers Britain fast forwarded to the future were after Thirty Six years nothing politically or socially has changed, if anything things have got worse. Musically think Crass, Flux of Pink Indians with a (dot)dash of Wire fed into the music blender, which has produced a sound akin to a full scale riot. This is angular and angry stuff; with a capital A! music to smash shit up to!! Bad Breeding have taken raging against the machine to another level, but it isn't a mindless thrash, it's intelligent stuff with words that say and mean something:

Hey, Ho, lets go....Here's a little something to remember Joey Ramone who died on this day fifteen years ago.....Today’s post finds him very much alive somewhere and at sometime in New York City  with his all-star band; Daniel Rey-Guitar/Andy Shernof-Bass/Marky Ramone-Drums, blasting out a short, sharp and sweet set of Ramones numbers and a couple of covers.  Enjoy! 

LE MAT - The Waltz of The Fool (*VINYL ALBUM, MP3 RE-POST*)

I've been asked to re-post this several times, so here we go. Le Mat came from Southend on Sea, England. Their debut album The Waltz of The Fool was recorded in 1982 over 10 days and on a budget of £2,000 it was eventually released on Friday 13th June 1983 by Whaam records. A very special album that defies all categories; is it folk, post punk, psychedelic or prog rock, who gives a fuck! It is a unique and beautiful record both musically and lyrically. If anything, it sounds in places like a group of travelling Elizabethan mistrals armed with electric guitars singing protest songs for the peasants.  I should have re-posted it way before now, but better late then never. You’d be a fool not to have a waltz to it, so here you go! It is a real gem that still shines brightly after over 30 years, shame this rip from my original vinyl is a bit crackly and has one glaring jump/scratch, I make no apologies for having a well played and loved record in my collection.   Enjoy!

JOHNNY THUNDERS COSA NOSTA - Live @ The Lyceum, London 9th Oct 1983 (* A MPFree Re-Post*)

An anonymous reader/listener who's got good taste has requested this mighty fine Johnny Thunders recording be re-posted, so here it is for whoever you are, and for whoever else wants a blast of some top quality Thunders gear, if they haven't already sampled it!. The Lyceum was packed and Johnny played his heart out for an hour and a half with a collection of top tracks, the old, new, borrowed and blue, the good the bad and the ugly, they are all here, on what is possibly my favourite Johnny Thunders live recording ever; as it captures everything that made him great as a musician and entertainer in just one hit. MANUFACTURED ROMANCE - Live in Stevenage 1981 (Re-Post)

Here's a re-post request (sorry it's taken so long Phil) Manufactured Romance are probably and possibly the most ignored band from the Post Punk 1980's era, 10 minutes of fame; One single, the brilliant and beautiful Time of My Life b/w Room To Breath and a couple of tracks on the Backstage Pass compilation. It would be 30 years till the band played together at a few gigs in 2008 and released a self financed and untitled ten track compilation CD of released and unreleased tracks. Anyway, here's what I had to say about Manufactured Romance when I first posted this.  These recordings literally fell out of the sky and hit me on the head, well almost, while putting some stuff into my loft a box of tapes fell out, nearly knocking me off the ladder one of the tapes lying on the floor was this one. I’d forgot I even had it, well borrowed it years ago from the original recorder (cheers Simon.H) the rest of the tapes aint worth writing home about, but this one, well……………..Where to begin? suppose the venue's a start; Bowes Lyon House in Stevenage, and when? 1981 In the space of 2 months Manufactured Romance played a couple of great gigs there and then. Considering this tape is nearly 27 years old, the quality aint too bad, a bit ropey at the beginning but it improves, and is very listenable to, especially when the bands recorded output was minimal; one single, posted here ages ago and a couple of tracks on a compilation album and that was it. Imagine Penetration and X-Ray Spex. Listening to these gigs shows what a great band Manufactured Romance were, a real loss to the 80’s music scene after they disappeared. It also captures the atmosphere from what I remember at both gigs with noisy audiences and skinheads chanting “4th Reich”, the bands original and slightly dubious name. While converting the tape I was transported back there to a room full of punks and skinheads jumping about wildly to the sound of punky pop’n’roll. The only song titles I can tell you they played over both gigs are “Time Of My Life”, “You” and a cover of “Knock On Wood” Great stuff, both then and now.

S*M*A*S*H T*H*E D*E*M*O*S - A R*E*P*O*S*T

Here's a repost request, nice'n'timely as there's a film due to be released about S*M*A*S*H and their fellow partners in the new wave of the new wave scene; These Animal Men.  More details about the FLAWED IS BEAUTIFUL DVD can be found here

“This is the sound of the suburbs” Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire to be exact “a satellite of London.” Local lads S*M*A*S*H’s flame shone brightly for a couple of years, when they went from ’local band’ status to darlings of the music biz, thanks to the music press sponsored pre Brit Pop;
New Wave of The New Wave, which was basically a load of bands with the attitude, style and sound of bands from between 77-79 lumped together by the NME and Melody Maker, S*M*A*S*H along with These Animal Men were the best of the bunch.
Like the Stone Roses on PCP was how S*M*A*S*H were described by the NME in 1994. On this their first demo recorded in 1990 when they were called Smash At The Blues they sounded more like The Stone Roses without the PCP. With their second demo, (not sure if it is actually their second demo, but it’s the second one in this post) an MC5 aural assault had started to creep into their songs, and they were just S*M*A*S*H. By the time of their 1993 Self Abused demo the PCP had kicked in and thanks to favourable reviews in fanzines, local radio station and a review in the NME the band were on their way, and what a great fucking band they were ,touring tirelessly up and down, and across the country with cheap gigs, cheap merchandise and their own fanzine; Petal Buzz, which helped to spread the word and build them a large and loyal following. Two independently released singles in 1993 received rave reviews and sold out endorsements from The Jesus and Marychain, Joe Strummer, New Statesman and The Guardian soon followed as did a Top Of The Pops appearance and a record deal with Virgin subsidiary Hi-Rise which saw the 2 singles re-released as a mini-album before their debut album Self Abused hit the streets in Sept 1994. More gigs followed including support slots with The Ramones, The Cramps and Corrosion of Conformity.
Sadly S*M*A*S*H disappeared from the radar in 1996. They did start playing again in 2003 and released a second album Icon in 2007, which I don’t think is a patch on their debut, the PCP seemed to have worn off, saying that though, it’s a ton better than a lot of the shite that’s been about over the last few years. Maybe S*M*A*S*H were a band of a moment and that moment may well have past, who knows, because I saw ’em live again at Club 85 in Hitchin a few years back, and they were still on the ball.

CHELSEA - Live @ Bowes Lyon House, Stevenage 29/3/81) *MPFREE DOWNLOAD*

For no reason other than I've been listening to their new album Saturday Night Sunday Morning a lot recently, I'm gonna post a copy of a gig that Chelsea did way back in March of the year 1981, (Sunday 29^th to be exact, as the ticket to yer right testifies) at Bowes Lyon House, Stevenage. In 1981 Chelsea were one of the few survivors from the class of 76 still knocking about, they were on the road promoting their soon to be released single Rockin' Horse. It was a new line up from the days of their self titled debut and Alternative Hits era after both James Stevenson and Chris Bashford upped and left Gene without a Guitarist and Drummer. New members were recruited, including Guitarist and songwriter Nic Austin and Chelsea were back in action with some top toe tapping Rock'n'Roll tunes that would become the Evacuate album.

In the 1980's Chelsea had been accepted by a new generation of UK Punk Rockers, and the band toured with Anti-Pasti, Anti-Nowhere League and Chron Gen. Gene was always proud of his punk rock roots, and lets face it without his input despite what history doesn't tell you, in the early days several doors into the music industry might not have been kicked in. By the end of 1982 Chelsea fell apart and Gene pursued a solo career, until 1983 when he got Chelsea back together with a line up that featured several “Stevenage Hooligans” who attended the gig in March 1981 (Guitarist Jon Thurlow, Drummer Geoff Sewell and Bassist Pete Dimmock, were playing in a local band called Optional Xtras, before Jon and Pete left and joined Chron Gen.) Geoff had played drums for Chelsea on the single Stand Out prior to Jon and Pete joining after the split of Chron Gen in 1982. This line up were captured on the Live and Well album. (recorded at The Lyceum in Oct 1983 when Chelsea supported Johnny Thunders.) Jon left soon after, but Geoff and Pete from the Stevenage connection remained and featured on the next couple of studio albums: Original Sinners and Rocks Off, in places both were rather strange Rock'n'Roll affairs; a blissed out and druggy Punk'n'Blues rhythm, not yer standard Chelsea fodder but still good stuff. Neither of them were well received by the music press, Original Sinners has never been released on CD, although there is a planned re-release of Rocks Off. 1989 saw the release of Underwraps, probably Chelseas weakest album, despite the help of Willy from Glam Poppers The Grip and the appearance of ex Clash Drummer Topper Headon on one track, but something was missing.

By the early 1990's Nic Austin was back in the line up along with Mat Sargent on Bass and Chelsea returned to form releasing a couple of cracking albums in quick succession; The Alternative and Traitors Gate. (Both are due to be re-released soon on CD and vinyl)  The classic Chelsea line-up (James Stevenson, Dave Martin, Geoff Myles, Chris Bashford and Gene) re-united in 1999 for the Social Chaos Punk Rock package tour across America, captured on another live Chelsea album; the in yer face and hostile Metallic F.O.

In 2005 minus Myles and Martin Chelsea released a new studio album, Faster, Cheaper, Louder and Better Looking, a great fist in the air pumping and powerful collection of new numbers that saw Chelsea move up a gear, one in which they have continued to the present day; their latest album is a classic,  due to the strength of the latest line up that unites Nic Austin and James Stevenson into an awesome twin guitar attack, alongside a solid rhythm section and Gene's passionate vocal delivery of songs that say something. Saturday Night Sunday Morning, check it out now! Until then rewind back to Stevenage 1981 and check out this piece of aural punk rawk history. The Sound quality is OK....it is what it is....

SCUM OF TOYTOWN.

Another re-post request, this time it's for the prog ska punk grooves of Stevenages finest....SCUM OF TOYTOWN.  I've collected the Fight Truth Decay (Tape), the live recording from Bowes Lyon House, Stevenage in 1982 and the legendary TimK PupSlop re-mixes and put them in one handy zip file, and here it is.  Scum of Toytown's new album Cells is out now on Ruin Nation Records.

THE HEARTBREAKERS - Live @ CBGB'S (7th Sept 1975)

Here's a re-post by request which catches The original Heartbreakers avec Richard Hell alive and live at CBGB'S in the fall of 1975 This incarnation of the band was a short lived affair with Johnny Thunders not wanting to play second fiddle to Richard Hell.  Hell attempted to take over the 'breakers, but Johnny left taking Walter Lure and Jerry Nolan with him,  Billy Rath replaced Hell and the rest is history. Talking of history anyone with a passing interest in Rock'n'Roll really should check out the film Looking For Johnny (The Legend of Johnny Thunders) which is what it says on the can....a film that searches for some sort of truth amongst the myths in the life of one of the most enduring Rock'n'Rollers ever to pick up a six string.

GANG WAR! - A MPFree Download!

Johnny Thunders and Wayne Kramers short lived Gang War fell apart on the New York streets a few months after these four tracks were recorded in May 1980 at Max's Kansas City. They find the Thunders and Kramer partnership in fine form, sometimes this wasn't always the case. On paper it was an inspired connection (New York Dolls + MC5) the reality however proved different and the struggle between Thunders the entertainer and Kramer the musician on top of disputes over the dollar became too much and it all ended too soon leaving very little behind in the way of a musical legacy bar several live recordings, (the best of which is Jungle Records GANG WAR!) much of the studio stuff remains officially unreleased. (Now there's a project for Easy Action or Jungle Records.... The complete Gang War collection.) which is criminal, because the stuff I've heard is the real Rock'n'Roll deal, as are the four tracks here. Thanx to the original uploader.

UK SUBS - In Progress Live! (Lock 42 Leicester, UK, Dec 11th 2010) *MPfree DOWNLOAD*

Charlie Harper's UK Subs are a punk rock institution, an influence on this young man not only when he was growing up but also as he's been growing older. Songs written over 30 years ago still resonate today, Warhead for example. Heads of state are still having fun, while we are still looking down the barrel of a gun and nations are still killing and dying.

This recording captures the band, (a month before their Work In Progress album was released) in fine levels to the red 'Pure 100% Proof Punk Rock' live action back in 2010 It is a career spanning set list of 22 songs old, new, borrowed'n'blue, by the 3^rd 'classic UK Subs line-up (Charlie, Alvin, Jet and Jamie) At present the band are preparing for the release of their new album; Yellow Leader, it is their penultimate one before Charlie's mission to have each of them named with every letter of the alphabet is complete. Details and updates on the albums progress can be found over at the Time and Matter website, T&M are also releasing a series of limited edition 7” Singles that feature bands Charlie Harper has collaborated with or featured on. There is also an Urban Dogs single and album in the pipeline, and if that wasn't enough UK Subs related action going down, work is in progress on a book about the band. If Jeremy S Gluck is the future of his own past then, here it is....Memory Deluxe, I Knew Buffalo Bill 2. his new album Unfortunately his friends from twenty seven years ago, when the original I Knew Buffalo Bill was released are no longer with us; Nikki Sudden, Epic Soundtracks, Roland S Howard and Jeffery Lee Pierce.... gone but never forgotten. Memory Deluxe might not have been made with them, but it has the same spirit and soul as its predecessor. On this trip Jeremy is joined by a couple of other friends; Robert Coyne, the son of Kevin Coyne on guitar and Werner Steinhauser on drums, together they have released a fourteen track album of beautiful, brittle and blissed out Rock'n'Roll, Suicide meet The Stones. ROSCOE VACANT - Article/Review/Interview, and MPFree Download!

Since I last wrote about Roscoe Vacant he has released a new album and a tape. For the album No Attack No Decay Roscoe has returned to his roots as a solo preformer. In 2008 he released the Escape From Doom Valley (Live EP) and a year later Nothings Gonna Change, but in 2010 he was backed by the Gantin' Screichs for the brilliant spikey and post-punk sounding Reckurdt. No Attack No Decay features several tracks from this, which stand naked and stripped to the bone. This is 'Acoustic Punk and Angry Pop!' full of passion and vitriol. Nine songs where the words mean something, these are songs about the small and big political picture; From domestic dysfunction to global drama; As Baghdad burns plates are smashed in the kitchen of a broken home where culture is delivered in shortbread tins to sanitised young lovers who bought it all from the liars and thieves who will not lead us anywhere because nothing is gonna change, not unless you make it! These are songs of love, pain and betrayal on several levels. If misery loves company then it needs Roscoe Vacant for a companion, because these are also songs of hope that are more real than likes of Frank Turner and Jake Bugg.

The tape finds Roscoe backed by Lo-Fi legends The No-Men, covering three songs by the arch avant garde glam/punkster that is Steve Treatment, who also contributes some of his own musings on the flipside of this brightly coloured yellow cassette. In a world of mass production and instant downloads It's good to see the ethics of DIY culture is alive and well, thanks to the good people at Topplers Records. It is also good to see that there are still artists out there pining their hearts on their sleeve and playing it for real. The album and tape are both available here, the limited number of lovingly hand crafted physical copies have all sold out, but they are sill available as downloads.

For a bit of background to No Attack No Decay, the demise of the Gantin' Screichs and how he found himself working with Steve Treatment, I emailed Roscoe, and this is what he had to say.

“Roscoe Vacant & the Gantin' Screichs started in 2010 and we released the album "Reckurdt" in 2011. Our lead guitarist Ross Gilchrist left in 2011 for personal reasons, but he and I are still really good friends. From then on we went in a different direction, moving away from grunge into more country punk type stuff. We got a fiddle player and a new guitarist in 2012 and put out a video for our first recording with that band in January 2013 "Conrad Brooks" (on Youtube just now). The band continued for a few months but it kind of petered out - again mostly personal and interpersonal reasons. I'm still really good friends with everyone in the band but none of us really want to do it again. Releasing the EP "No Attack/No Decay" in 2013 was an attempt to go back to basics and why people enjoyed my stuff in the first place - solo acoustic punk rock. It was also a means by which I could get the song that inspired the title out - "Exit Strategy". I split up with my fiancee of 9 years in Feb 2013, so that had a baring on the band too. Being able to get back on the horse and make some music was liberating."

“I've been a fan of Steve's for about 5 years. I knew Allan from the NoMen because we have mutual friends but also because he was in the legendary Scottish folk punk band Nyah Fearties from the late 1980s early 1990s. The Steve collaboration just came out of that. I wanted to cover some of his less well-known songs and songs he'd only really demoed or played with his band The Ticket Inspectors in the late 1980s, so I recorded the 3 songs on the cassette. It was very spontaneous.”

A-M-I Anti Meathead Inc (*A REVIEW*)

Suck on this George Bernard Shaw! Youth isn't being wasted on this bunch of Brighton youngsters.  With a combined age of 55 four piece punk rock upstarts A-M-I are a young band. At 15 years old Guitarist Marley Perez is old enough to be Charlie Harper from the UK Subs's grandson....wait up the press release says he is! Looks like punk rock is in the blood.

A-M-I first got together back in 2010, and released a single Meathead/Billy No Mates in 2012 (Co-produced with Charlie Harper.) Anti Meathead Inc is their debut album, and what a gem it is, a real blast of youthful punk rock metal exuberance with a message of what matters to them in the world today; Consumerism, Bullying, Environmentalism, Rebellion and Treachery.  The antithesis of One Direction.

A-M-I are carrying the punk rock flame deeper into the darkening years of the 21^st Century; lighting the way forward for a future generation who have had enough of being sold the shrink wrapped pre packed garbage pop that is the X-Factor and The Voice. The Kids are Alright, it's the adults that are the problem! but not in this case cos A-M-I have had the likes of the UK Subs and Captain Sensible mentoring them, which can't have been a bad thing as just one listen to their album will testify. A-M-I have a musical maturity beyond their years and have developed a sound that is not just their own but also a reflection of their influences; The Clash, Crass, The Ruts, Metallica, Slipknot. The songs are: Fast and frantic, chugging and chopping, tuneful and thoughtful. Through the crystal clear production, the Guitars thrash the drums crash the bass bashes and the vocals shout, scream and shriek, Ten tracks each one as catchy as nits in the school playground and just as hard to get out of yer head. If as another old saying goes “you are only as old as you feel” then after listening to this album several times I'm gonna be fifteen this year and not fifty.

CONTINENTAL LIAISON - A Review and *FREE DOWNLOAD*

Continental Liaison are not quite like anything I've heard for a long while; they have ripped it up and started again with a unique deconstructed post punk rock'n'roll mash up that hits you like The Human League on heroin,  a garage rock Sigue Sigue Sputnik or Throbbing Gristle play Pop. Continental Liaison have plundered the past, and made it their own, with an agitated and angular attack on the senses. A raw soulful synth throb battles with fuzzed up, frantic guitars, topped by some moody, monotonous and monotone vocals that offer words of meaning. The sound of 80's Disco-Pop fed through a 21^st Century Rock'n'Roll blender. Boy this is brilliant stuff!

DEADCUTS are contagious to you....yeah, yeah, yeah!

If this was the NME, and I was some trend setting music journo then I'd be proclaiming that East London's Rock'n'Roll animals Deadcuts were the best new band of 2014, and the future of Rock'n'Roll, but it isn't and I aint so....I wont, but what I will say is that they are the best band I have heard for many a year, and as for them being the future of Rock'n'Roll.... Well, does Rock'n'Roll have a future in a world of the bland, sanitised and desensitised? Well yes it does as long as there are bands like Deadcuts out there; ones that defy categorisation, playing music that challenges and confronts the senses and takes you to different places. A band that treads its own path through the debris and broken glass of the past.

Deadcuts play short sharp songs of epic proportions, full of more hooks than a butchers shop. Gruff gravely vocals, a twin guitar attack that swoops and soars above a solid rhythm section before diving and cutting into yer flesh like a rusty razor. Brutal and beautiful, sexy and sleazy stuff, music to fuck and get fucked up to. It's what guitars were built for!

Their debut album Dark Is The Night promises to be something special if the tracks I've heard from it are anything to go by. There's some Deadcuts gear  to watch on youtube and to listen to on Soundcloud or take a trip to their facebook page.

If this was the NME and I was a trend setting journo I'd also have said that Deadcuts sound like a Punked Up Psychedelic Furs for the 21st Century.

COLORYDE - The 1994 Demos. (Re-Uploaded)

Twenty years since these demo's were recorded, Coloryde have returned to the studio to record an album, scheduled for release in March. Coming straight out of Welwyn Garden City/Hatfield, England in the early 1990's. Coloryde were a indie/mod/punk band with a collection of infectious and passionate songs. In the Brit pop years Coloryde should have been massive, but alas we got the likes of Shed Seven instead.  WHY?  Because the taste makers had no taste!
