Who Knew the Grim Reaper Had a Sense of Irony?

Let's chat a bit about Clayton Lockett.

You know -- the late Clayton Lockett who's reaping all kinds of misguided (and misplaced) sympathy because the drugs used to execute him didn't kill him quickly enough to satisfy death penalty opponents.

The late Clayton Lockett, career criminal.

The late Clayton Lockett who was convicted and sentenced to death by a jury for the torture, beating, rape, sodomy, burying alive, and murder of a 19 year-old young woman in Oklahoma -- a young victim who was selected at random during a crime spree Lockett launched shortly after he was released from prison.

The late Clayton Lockett who died of a heart attack some 43 minutes after he was sedated, and after writhing, twitching, and convulsing for quite some time while the Grim Reaper took a coffee break.

The Clayton Lockett whom doctors contemplated taking to the hospital shortly before he breathed his last. (Taking to the hospital?!?!)

The Clayton Lockett whom many claim suffered a "botched" execution.

That execution wasn't botched. Clayton Lockett died. In agony, as did his victim. Man may err, but God doesn't make mistakes.

And I believe it was probably the vengeful, Old Testament God who had a hand in Clayton Lockett's demise.

So, shall we chat about Clayton Lockett?

No. Let the trash in the landfill stay undisturbed.

I'm not a good enough Christian to feel any pity toward that animal. Nor to speak his name ever again.

From Pepper's Inbox

Pepper got this email today and forwarded it to me:

Pepper,

Would you like to help send Mitt Romney to the White House without ever leaving your home and earn free Mitt gear, too?  Our "Volunteer for Mitt" program is up and running for supporters who can spare a few minutes to make personal calls to other voters across the country.

To thank you for your hard work and support for Mitt, the campaign will be giving away thank you gifts based on the number of calls made between Monday, June 4th and Saturday, June 9th.

Incentives are the following:
  • 100 total calls made - bumper sticker
  • 250 total calls made - lapel pin
  • 500 total calls made - signed photo
  • 1,000 total calls made - Romney t-shirt
  • 1,500 total calls made - Romney half-zip sweatshirt
To get started making calls, go to http://mi.tt/Volunteer-for-Mitt to log in or register.

With your help, we can build the strong grassroots organization we need to be successful in November. Please consider donating a few minutes of your time from the comfort of your own home to this critical effort.

Thank you for your help!

While I have decided to support Mitt (mainly because his name is not Barack Hussein Obama), I think I shall have to decline this particular offer of a quid pro quo.  As I replied to Pepper, I despise getting those political calls so much myself that I would be loathe to inflict them on anyone else.

On the other hand, if that "Romney half-zip sweatshirt" is also a hoodie . . . the delicious irony of it all might just cause me to reconsider.

Your Gift-Giving Guide

Blog buddy, Andy, occasionally shares "unusual" gift suggestions that he and Mrs. Andy have run across.  When I saw this one in a Bed, Bath and Beyond mailer in the "Great Gifts Under $20" section, I thought that I would do the same.  It's just what everyone needs!

For entertainment purposes only.  Heh.  The gift that keeps on giving (by saving the recipient all those attorneys' fees, court costs, and fines?).

This was a very entertaining mailer -- the Breathalyzer was positioned on the page right beside this gift suggestion--

Bed, Bath and Beyond is into irony!  Who knew?

Now, go warm up those credit cards!

Another of Those Posts that My Mother Would Disapprove

Wouldn't you just love to be a fly on the wall of the hospital room where this picture was taken!  Hugo and those Krazy Kastro Boyz!  Ol' Hugo was even sporting his favorite track suit!

Being southern, my Mama always admonished me to hold my tongue if I couldn't say something nice about someone. Ordinarily, being southern myself, I heed that admonition.  But, there are just some folks that set my tongue to wagging, and Hugo Chavez is one of them.

Pepper forwarded me this link in an email this afternoon:

"From all available reports, Hugo Chavez is in critical condition in a hospital in Cuba. The Venezuelan communist dictator was taken to Cuba several weeks ago for an emergency surgery regarding pelvic swelling, which has led many to speculate that he is dealing with prostate cancer.

In the irony of ironies, Hugo Chavez was faced with the decision to have to leave his own nation, and the health care system that was supposed to be an example for other nations, to receive care from another questionable health care system in Cuba."

In the "Subject" line, he titled the email, "Apparently God Has a Sense of Humor."

It would appear so, indeed.

In my reply I suggested that he get together a group of retired Blackwater guys, invade Venezuela, and storm the golf courses to take them back from "the people" before Chavez comes home.  I haven't heard from him in awhile.  Hmmm, I wonder.  I'd better go check whether any of the jungle camo uniforms are missing . . . .

Is a Puzzlement

Thought for the day: misguided do-gooders often waste time and resources.

But they can sure give one a good giggle.

Better Check the Limit on That Race Card!

This is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. The Daily Show's “Senior Black Correspondent” Larry Wilmore discovers that "The Race Card" is maxed out and explains how that happened -- and what can replace it. It even gets in a dig at my jailbird former Congressman, "Dollar Bill" Jefferson! WARNING: Adult language.

An Award That Defines Irony

Leonard Pitts, the Miami Herald columnist (whose columns often make my skin crawl) nailed it on the Helen Thomas issue. You remember -- the Helen Thomas who advocated that Israeli Jews "go home" to Poland or Germany or wherever.

In yesterday's column, Pitts said:

Here's some bitter irony for you.

Back in April, I received the Helen Thomas Spirit of Diversity award. Yes, diversity. And yes, Helen Thomas, the legendary White House correspondent who recently nuked her career — and legacy —by telling a rabbi, following a Jewish heritage ceremony at the White House, no less, that the Jews of Israel should, in effect, go back where they came from.

Life sure takes some funny bounces. Two months ago, I was honored to receive an award in the name of a woman who has asked combative questions of every president since John F. Kennedy. Two months later, receiving a Helen Thomas award in the spirit of diversity feels not unlike receiving a Kim Jong Il award in the spirit of diplomacy.

Emphasis mine.

"Kim Jong Il Spirit of Diplomacy Award." Good one.

Grand Theft Auto in the Crescent City

There is an article on page 1, below the fold, of today's Times-Picayune about a burglary and car theft. The thieves scaled a fence to access the lot, then broke into an out-building to nab the keys to two cars. To make good their escape, they used forklifts in the lot to plow through the chained gates.

The loot? Two unmarked police cars, one of which is equipped with blue light and siren. One has a license plate, the other doesn't.

The police are asking for help from the public to recover the stolen vehicles. You may contact them at 1.877.903.STOP(7867).

After you stop laughing. Mmmphhh!!!!

Ya Gotta Wonder What He Was Thinking . . .

Remember this picture? The Tax Day T.E.A. Party sign?

Someone stole it.

It was about 15 feet from the Neighborhood Watch sign.

I'll just get over the theft if the thief plants it in his yard. Or mails it to Congress.

Ah, New Orleans!

I attended a neighborhood association meeting last night. I expected to get some good information and to meet our new District 2 Police Major. I didn't expect irony.

Those of us who had donated money to purchase "Neighborhood Watch" signs were told that we could pick them up at the close of the meeting and receive instructions for mounting them on our block. You know the sign -- the one with the shadowy "Boris" figure leering at you, obviously up to no good.

So, with my sign in hand, I asked Nell about the mounting instructions. She replied that I could attach it to any utility pole on my block, but I should be certain to mount it high enough "to discourage anyone from stealing it."

Steal the Neighborhood Watch sign. New Orleans to a tee.
