F is for Family ~ A to Z (backwards)

Family is very important to all of us.   This first collage is a re-post, but it may be new to some of you.

The first picture in the collage below was made about 1966.  That's my daddy on the far left holding my sister's baby.   My sister, Helen is kneeling holding her first child.  My stepmother is in a checked jumper by Helen.  Grandmother Yarborough is seated in the chair.  The others are uncles, aunts and cousins.

From the left, the first and the fifth ladies are my sisters and the others are first cousins.   The bottom left picture was made at a reunion of my mother's people about 1980.  I'm the third one from the right side, acting silly, of course!   The picture on the bottom right in this collage was made about 1960 at a family Christmas gathering.  The third and fourth are my sisters and the others are first cousins.

The pictures in the collage below were made at the gathering for Jeep's family to meet my family before we married.   Jeep and I cooked lunch and we had a wonderful day!  A couple of people (my granddaughter, Kym and Jeff's wife, Cheryl) are missing from these shots.   They were elsewhere when we made these.  Top left is Jesse- grandson, Kay- daughter-in-law, Joe- my son, and me.   The top picture on the right is Jeep's  son, Doug,  and in front of him is Jeep's daughter, Jennifer.    On the  far right is my son, Joe and next to him is Jeep's son, Jeff, (with the suspenders).   Of course, the old couple  in the middle is Jeep and me. ☺

On the bottom left are Jeep's children, Doug, Jennifer and Jeff.  Bottom right from L to R is Bryan and his wife Jennifer,  Doug and his wife, Laura,  Jeep, me, Jesse, Jeff, Joe and his wife, Kay.

TWAS THE NIGHT OF THANKSGIVING,

BUT I JUST COULDN'T SLEEP.

I TRIED COUNTING BACKWARDS,

I TRIED COUNTING SHEEP.

THE LEFTOVERS BECKONED -

THE DARK MEAT AND WHITE,

BUT I FOUGHT THE TEMPTATION

WITH ALL OF MY MIGHT.

I CRASHED THROUGH THE CEILING, FLOATING INTO THE SKY,

WITH A MOUTHFUL OF PUDDING AND A HANDFUL OF PIE.

BUT, I MANAGED TO YELL AS I SOARED PAST THE TREES....

HAPPY EATING TO ALL - PASS THE CRANBERRIES, PLEASE.

MAY YOUR STUFFING BE TASTY,

MAY YOUR TURKEY BE PLUMP.

MAY YOUR POTATOES 'N GRAVY HAVE NARY A LUMP.

MAY YOUR YAMS BE DELICIOUS.

My World Tuesday

The day was gray, cool and cloudy and those conditions always bring the birds to our feeders.   This pretty female Cardinal posed nicely for me to get her picture from our dining room window.

Sky Watch Friday

The Hutch - Before

I should have posted this as the 'before' picture of the hutch.   This is my Daddy making home-made ice cream.   He loved ice cream and made it when we had family get-togethers.   You can see the old green hutch and that it is ugly and well used, sitting out in their utility room.   I think they had a piece of linoleum on the work surface.  I sure like the wood look better that this green. Daddy would be proud that I refinished it!

Rest in Peace, Daddy.   I hope they serve ice cream up in Heaven!

This hutch has a lot of sentimental value to me.   It was one of the first purchased pieces of furnishings that my parents had when they started housekeeping in the late 1920's.   By the time I was old enough to remember, it had been painted.  In fact, over the years it had several different coats of paint, the last one being an ugly shade of green!   When we divided the furnishings of our parent's old home,
I chose this old hutch.  It is very plain and constructed of oak.
 I worked hard removing the many coats of paint and finally got down to the wood!
It still has the original hardware.   When Grandmother was living with us after Mother died, she kept flour in one of the big drawers.   Over the drawers on the right there was a pull-out board where she rolled out dough to make biscuits, etc.   The board is missing and we filled in with another piece of wood.   This hutch is now gracing the dining area in the home of my son.  This shot was made at a family gathering and it seemed like a good spot to set the cokes, etc.

A Few More Pictures from the Smokies.

We made a lot of pictures of the wild turkeys and the deer together.  Here's one to give you the idea.

When we were almost at the end of our Cades Cove tour.   We saw a lot of wild turkeys grazing on the grass seeds.   While we were watching them, two or three deer came up and grazed along with them.

A Day in the Country

This is an ordinary day in the country.  

This was the tinest butterfly!   I don't know what kind it is, but you can see its size compared to the Lantana blooms.   It looks faded, but that may be just the way it looks all the time.   Its body (and the body of the one below) has a bluish look.

I'm always chasing Butterflies when I see them around the flowers.  This is the first year I've seen this Common Buckeye butterfly.   It was a little ragged looking, but it was fun to get to make pictures of it anyway.

I walked up to the woods behind our house and just stood there listening to the silence, which was  broken only by the sound of leaves fluttering to the ground.   I want to walk up in these woods, but this is our neighbor's property where they keep the horses.

I was out in the yard with the camera, (imagine that!) and I thought the field across the road looked really white, so I made this picture.    Later that day the machines came in and picked it clean!

This was made with the 300 mm lens, so the field is not nearly as close as it appears.

The Chipping Sparrows are back!   They swooped in and checked out the feeders.

I can depend on Babe to come to the fence every time I go near there.   She's a very gentle old mule.

I was so glad to see that the Carolina Wren is back!   He is so cute and so loud!!!  Last year I got some good shots of him when he perched near the dining room window for a long time.  He almost made us late for Sunday school that day!

Mr. Bluebird flew in a sat in the seed feeder for a long time, just singing his song.  Then he hopped over in the pan of water and sat there for a  long time.  He finally got out, ruffled his feathers and flew away.
