2008 in Review

I'm going with my parents and the kids to the cabin on December 26th so I thought I'd recap 2008 before I go...

January - In January we realized Justin can't see and needed glasses! We got him in and got him glasses and we saw what a handsome, grown up little boy he became!

February - In February we moved into our new home! And Justin turned 4!

March - In March we celebrated Kevin's birthday...he turned 29! And EASTER!

April - In April we celebrated 8 years of marriage. And Jayden learned to sit up!

In May we celebrated Mother's Day. And I got caught in a hailstorm.

In June I turned 27 and Jayden and I went on a women's retreat with South Stake! On the way up there we stopped to do the Trail of 100 Giants with friends!

For the fourth of July I caught all the kids looking at the camera! What a feat that is!! Jacob also went to the pancake breakfast the scouts held for a fundraiser and as you can see from the picture, he began his descent into "I'm too cool for pictures" mode.

August was spent vacationing with friends at the cabin!

In August school started for Jacob and Justin, and Dawn!

In September Jayden started to walk! And Justin realized, school is HARD!

In October Justin turned 9 and Jayden turned 1! And there was Halloween too!

In November we had Thanksgiving, and the Leaning Tower of Parnell Children!

In December Dawn passed her CNA class (and all her others) and went away for a girl's weekend away. Jacob discovered that Carrow's has bottomless hot chocolate and by the end of the night reassures us that, "there is such thing as too much of a good thing!"

Jacob's Christmas Concert

Surprisingly, for the first time in all the years we've had a child in public school - there was a CHRISTMAS program. No, not a HOLIDAY program, or WINTER program, a CHRISTMAS program. They sang/played Christmas songs and I was SHOCKED! On one hand I silently said, "Good for you, school! For recognizing your Christian majority!" and silently did think, just a little, "Happy Holidays, Happy Hannukah, and Happy Kwanza! To all the families of our school district whose holiday is going unnoticed..." I had to reconcile myself with a little PC'ness. I mean, I really do feel a little bad that a Jewish kid in the school may have felt slighted by all the Christmas stuff, yk? Anyhow, back on topic. Jacob played the flutaphone. Wanna hear?????

It was cute! Next year he wants to join the Orchestra and play in the percussion section - the DRUMS! LOL

Jacob and his friend, Michael.

Brrrr - SO COLD!

One of the things I love about Bakersfield is the fact it DOESN'T snow here. Well it has...about every 10 years we get a little snow, but usually hoodies are appropriate winter attire. Tonight it is COLD and there is a SLIGHT chance of snow. We'll see how that pans out.

So, how are the kids doing?

Jakey is getting so stinking tall! He's gonna be taller than me by the time he's 10 or 11! Oh and he's not "Jakey" for sure anymore. He is "Jake" or "Jacob" and he is SO cool. Recently he got in trouble in the afterschool program for telling a girl that she was too young to have a boyfriend. They are in the 3rd grade! He's right! The teeny-bopper in charge of his group felt it wasn't any of his business and he should have left the girl alone rather than lecturing her. I get the sense that THAT right there is what is wrong with society today...too many people think it isn't any of their business when someone is messing up. What 3rd grader needs a boyfriend? Yikes! Jakey (Jake or Jacob) assures me he does NOT have a girlfriend but that he is going to convert and marry some chick from High School Musical. So, how does he know she isn't already LDS? Cause mom, she wears "tank tops" and her shorts go above her knees. LOL! He's observant!

Justin is LOVING school. One day I needed to get gas before going to drop Justin off and instead of turning left at the end of our street to go towards the school, I turned right to get gas. Oh boy! You'd have thought I was kidnapping Justin! I had to get him out and drag him in the store too because I have been taking out cash because for some reason gas is cheaper with cash in town, rather than by credit/debit. I was worried the store owner was going to call the police with the scene Justin was causing screaming, "take me to school! I don't want to go with you ANYWHERE! I want to go to school NOW!"

Jayden is growing up so fast! Her vocabulary is growing and growing and tonight she has proclaimed me "bad bad" because I was playing around on the computer rather than nursing her. Luckily right now she's enjoying her time with Daddy while he puts her to sleep. He is her favorite person right now, I think he sneaks her junk food...LOL When you say, "I love you!" to Jayden she says, "I love Daddy!" back to you.

Anyhow, I just thought I'd update, and share some funny kids stories because I feel like my poor blog is so neglected right now. Well I hear Justin talking to Jacob in the dark and I *need* them to sleep because Jakey (see I can't keep my fingers from typing it!) and I are supposed to go for a run tomorrow morning. We'll see, cause it's COLD out!

Straight A's

I got my English grade finally and it's an A! I'm very happy about this because I worked SO incredibly hard on that research paper! My teacher and I did not see eye to eye on ANY issues this semester so I was very worried that I wouldn't get a fair grade but that just goes to show you that someone can hold beliefs and not grade papers by them.

Well, I need to go run a few errands, so I'll be back! :)

Linda!

I keep trying to comment on your blog and blogger totally won't let me! I've tried every post you've made, tried just clicking on the title of your most recent post, etc. nothing is working on my end! Anyhow, I just wanted to tell you that your newest granddaughter is just beautiful and that is an amazing picture of her with her mommy! Anyhow, hopefully I can figure that all out...what's up with blogger not letting me comment?! LOL Oh well, in the meantime you get your very own post over here at my blog! :)

It's going around...

You might be asking yourself...Dawn has all this free time with school being out for winter, so where is she? Why isn't she blogging or commenting on blogs? The answer comes from a simple equation...

3 kids + 2 adults + the stomach flu + ONE BATHROOM = Well certainly not much blogging.

Luckily I think it's a 24 hour thing. Doesn't make me feel much better about it though. Bleh. Be back when I feel a bit better.

D Parnell, CNA <----how I chart now :)

Oh yeah. I passed! :)

When we got there Friday morning I was about ready to pass out I was so danged nervous! I didn't eat in the morning because my stomach was so yucky and by mid-afternoon I thought I was gonna pass out!

Angela was a little late getting me so we weren't able to stop at Starbucks, I have a thing for their Pumpkin Spice Steamer (Steamer=steamed milk, no coffee in this drink, oh and it's AWESOME.) So off we went to school...ready to take our test!

We got there and 25 of us were waiting for our testers to come and introduce themselves. Our lecture instructor, Jan, came and tried to calm us all down and go over some last minute things with us. Finally, the testers from Los Angeles, for the Red Cross, showed up and we were on our way!

They had us come up one by one with all of our documents and checked us in for the test. The lady who took my information saw that I was born in Torrance, CA and she is from there! I think later on, I got better marks from her from being from Torrance...LOL!

One lady in our class, a little older than most of us (50's), had a very old social security card and they weren't able to read her number clearly and so she was not able to test. I felt terrible for her, she was so upset, she quickly left.

Then, SURPRISINGLY, they started from the END of the alphabet with skills! I'm kinda middle-ish, but I got to go with the first group. We went to the skills lab and prepared to test on our skills first. I got paired with a girl from my class named Peggy.

First, I got the lady from Torrance, and I went first, while Peggy was my patient. I drew respirations. Resps are EASY, count how many times someone breaths in ONE minute. I've got that under control! Too bad Peggy was VERY nervous and was shaking in the bed while I was trying to watch her breath! LOL She was trying to calm herself and so her breathing was so slow I had to say I would report an abnormal vital sign to the nurse because her breathing is just too slow! The lady from Torrance also passed me off on handwashing...which I was worried about because I'm short and have a hard time reaching without letting my uniform touch the sink. Peggy measured my height (thank goodness she didn't draw weight!) and we were off to the next station.

Second, we were tested by an older woman on personal care. I ran for the wristband and peggy had to go first. She drew brush the resident's teeth and so she had to pretend to brush my teeth. Then, the lady took out all of the oral care related skills and only four were left for me to choose from. The one I really didn't want was perineal care (brief changing) because it's awkward to simulate on a classmate! LOL I drew nail care. Whew! I washed Peggy's hands and pretended to clean under her nails and trim them (pretend) and the lady kept interrupting me to ask me questions, snapped at me when I responded and overall I started to feel like I was a complete idiot and not ready for this at all!

The third round Peggy beat me to the bracelet so I chose first. I drew change resident to the side lying position. Yay! LOL So I rolled Peggy onto her side and stuck some pillows behind her and between her legs and viola! Done! At one point my tester got really upset and ran out of the room and yelled for me to go stand against a wall, come to find out she was getting a parking ticket while I was testing...LOL! Overall, I felt confident in my skill. Peggy drew range of motion exercises and she did a great job.

The older lady gave us our scores and surprisingly she wrote the NICEST things on my test papers! After all the yelling, being sharp and critical, and all of that, she was NICE! LOL I passed with no problems and got my card for the skills part of the test.

I took my registration papers back to the classroom and took the written exam. I think I missed four because that's how many times I saw her mark my paper, but they don't tell you, it's just pass or fail. I was the first in my class to get my certificate because it took me very little time to do the test.

I waited for Jennifer and Angela to be done. Jennifer's last name starts with a V so she was in my group but Angela's last name starts with an A and she was doing her skills. Jennifer and I went and ate some lunch and when we came back Angela had been given her certificate and we were all OFFICIAL CNA'S!

So it's official, I passed the class! Got my certification! Now to get to work! But I think I've got that one covered... :)

Done!

I took all my finals and now I await my final scores.

In health I got the 100% I mentioned before, and I got an A in the class.

In English I got 85% on the final and I am still waiting for my research paper grade but my essay 3 grade was an A so I'm hoping for an A or B in the class.

In CNA class we took a test for extra credit that I got 23 points of extra credit on. I had a 93% in the class and could miss about 10 questions on the final and still get my 93%...the final seemed fairly easy so I'm pretty sure I got an A in the class but our grades aren't posted yet.

Tomorrow is the state certification test for CNA class. I sure hope I get my certificate! I need to study a bit tonight for it.

Anyhow, tonight is the RS Christmas dinner so I need to run and clean up around here, shower and get dressed, and study a bit but I'll be back tomorrow with HOPEFULLY good news!

One A Down, Two To Go!

I just finished taking my online health final - 100% And even though it was open book, I BARELY opened my book. :) Really a lot of it is stuff we learned in CNA class, like about valves of the heart and stuff. So good stuff :) All done with that, now onto English and CNA which are on the same day.

Some pictures in the meantime...
Angela, Me, and Jennifer, enjoying the R-Ranch this past weekend...

Our CNA class dinner...

The lady in the red is our instructor, sitting across from me. Everyone else is a student.

I have more pics but I've gotta work on my house, my final paper, study for finals, and my state testing...I'll probably be scarce this week...fingers crossed for good grades! :)

And then we're supposed to go out to dinner with our group, but we'll see...and then we girls are off to the mountains for fun and relaxing and studying before finals week begins! Later all! See ya Sunday! (Don't worry, I packed the camera!)

How I feel

How I feel about Twilight...

How I feel about school right now...

And how I feel about the election...

End of the Year Resolutions

Rather than getting all caught up in making promises to myself, I've decided to resolve to do a few things by the end of this year! (And usually I'm such a procrastinator!)

1. Finish that dang English Research Paper and stop worrying about the grade I'm gonna get on it!
2. Wean Jayden. It's just time.
3. Clear out the drawers and closets of clothes we don't wear!
4. Change my blog background to something other than Thanksgiving!
5. Give the Ward Relief Society Newsletter an overhaul.
6. Read a book just for the fun of it!
7. Finish Christmas shopping, well for that matter - START Christmas shopping.
8. Bake something...from scratch.
9. Spend more time with my family.

Ok, so now, hold me accountable...

I suppose I could knock one or two things off that list as it's 8:41 am and Jayden is STILL asleep. Thank you Tule Fog from preventing daylight from entering my house!

Finally, Twilight.

So, on opening night I got to go see Twilight! Yep the MIDNIGHT premiere! It was AWESOME.

That is from left to right, my mom, me, Angela (friend from school), Shannon (friend from the bestest ward ever, that neither of us are in anymore), and Robin (luckiest friend to still be in the bestest ward ever, although some bestness is lost from Shannon and I not being in that ward anymore...LOL). It was so fun to go out and let loose with some girlfriends while going through a ROUGH semester!

Fortunately this next two weeks marks the end of this semester. I am going away this coming weekend to the cabin with Angela and Jennifer (not a twilight fan, I know, how could she!) to study for finals and relax. Then we face the end of the semester with finals and state certification testing for our CNA class. I've almost survived this semester! :)

Turning the other cheek? Or Dawn the Doormat?

Unfortunately I often let people say things and then later think of some wonderful comeback that I should have said and go over the conversation in my mind over and over again, resolving not to let them speak to me that way again and also hoping that they won't...but some people will continue to say things about you or to you that are hurtful if you don't stand up to them.

Kevin's grandparents have been married for 30-something years and don't have any biological children together but their children are very much THEIR children. His Grandpa's son, Don, married a woman about 2-3 years ago named Becky that he had known in highschool (as had his step-brother and sisters...Kevin's mom, etc.) This woman is loud and while I'm trying to think of another word to describe it only one, a bad one, comes to mind...you know the witchy one. Anyhow, she's not a very nice person. And she's just incredibly loud.

She's said a ton of awful things about me, my kids, my mother-in-law, pretty much everyone in the family but Kevin's grandparents. She has three children that regularly come to family functions, as does her mother. I like her kids and her mother. I don't like her.

She has on more than one occassion called Jayden fat. WTHeck??? How is my 17 lb baby fat? How? She did it again on Thanksgiving.

Also, as her 18 year old daughter was leaving she just left the front door wide open, Jayden and I were sitting across from it and she was asleep and I called out, "Hey, were you born in a barn!" Jokingly, hoping she would think to come back and shut the door. Well she didn't...and her mom got in my face, "what did you say about my daughter????" And got all upset with me for saying that! What? Her daughter isn't/wasn't upset by it I'm sure, if she had heard me I know she takes a joke better than to get mad cause of that!

Anyhow after some more little comments about/to my MIL, my MIL grabbed up all my kids and a couple of hers and rushed out the door, "that's it! We're going home!" and ran out the door with them. I could see this look on my Grandmother-in-law's face that she was really upset. All of her children had spent the entire night, thanksgiving, on the back porch because they were tired of hearing Becky talk about everyone the way she was. I stayed for a few minutes to talk to her, and she was really upset by it all.

I have been kicking myself for not getting up and saying something when Becky spoke that way to me, or about my family. I'm tired of taking her crap, and I'm tired of my family eating and staying on the back porch because of this woman!

I guess when My MIL left she ran into Becky's other daughter out on the front porch and said, "what is your mother's problem?" and Sierra said that it was that, "oh she's mad at Dawn." Well I guess after they left, Sierra told Becky that my MIL had asked her what her problem was and so Becky called Kevin's grandparents playing the "oh they're so mean to me..." card. Basically, even Kevin's grandpa, was like, "oh well, what do you want me to do about it?" Because they KNOW she's horrible and mean to everyone.

I'm DONE. I mean I don't say anything because it's not nice and it's not very Christian like to throw punches on holidays, but I've had it with her. And if one of my children ever hears and understands her speaking about them in that way I really don't think I will be able to stop myself...so I think it's time to say something to her. She's terrorized this family too long and I'm sick of it. She's frequently over at Kevin's grandparent's house on weekdays and I think this week I'm gonna have to have a talk with her. She needs to learn to keep her mouth shut.

So what do you do? Do you tell someone who does this to you to stop? Or do you just keep letting them do what they're doing and run the risk of your children evening hearing/understanding the things she says about them?

Poor Neglected Blog...

I have a picture from the Twilight Premiere to share...

I have pictures of Jayden to share...

I have cute kid stories to share...

I have the fact I got a 100% on a test for CNA class to share...

My schedule for school next year...

The fact my books are like $500! Ouch! To vent about...

2500 of 3000 words for a research paper written and no clue where the other 500 words are going to come from to share...

But I've got Blogger's Block, and no motivation to go find my camera and get the pics off of it, and am just so tired tonight...

Sigh. BBL with all of the above! Oh and a tag to fulfill.

Kevin and I are high school sweethearts. We met when I was 16 and he was 18 at Burger King. I worked the drive through and he worked the broiler, we closed together most nights. Eleven years, the day after Thanksgiving was our boss's last day as the manager of our store as she was leaving Burger King for Rent A Center. She breaked everyone in pairs so they'd have someone to talk to and she also gave everyone a free lunch that day. Kevin and I got to take our break together, and here we are eleven years, three kids, lots of jobs, homes, cars, laughter, tears, happiness, sadness, death, birth, and everything in between later.

During our eleven years together many of our friends also married their high school sweethearts. I actually thought it was rare to do that, but a huge rush of us all got married within a year or so of each other and had families. Now time has taken its toll on these young love relationships and these marriages are not all aging gracefully.

There is one couple, divorced last year. Both of them are remarrying here soon or have recently remarried, but overall - moving on. It surprised me to hear of their breakup as they got married the SAME WEEK Kevin and I got married.

Another couple has been through so much together. They were together a few years before Kevin and I and recently decided to split. Their decision isn't final but hearing some of the issues they are facing has made me see their relationship in a different light.

As we are nearing our 30's (Kevin will be 30 in March) more and more of our friends are divorcing. For a while it seemed like we were attending weddings every other weekend, and now it seems like we're hearing of more and more divorce.

Here's the thing. Kevin and I don't have the perfect marriage. I watched The Notebook tonight and I'm no Allie and he's not Noah, but that's ok. I don't always have butterflies in my stomach anymore when he kisses me, instead it's familiar and safe. But I do have the deep need and desire to have my best friend with me. When something good happens I want to share it with him, and when something horrible happens he is who I look to for support. When I see something for the first time, I want Kevin to be with me when I experience it, and when I am hurt, angry, or sad I want him to comfort me. Everything about me is him and everything about him is me, we are like one person and while we exist separately, we are a unit, we are a package deal.

I've been sheltered these past five years. I've stayed at home cooking, cleaning, raising our children, protected from the outside world. Since I have ventured out I realize how much the world can affect you, your family, and your marriage. Outside influences bombard me every day. A friend offers me tea I have to explain why I won't drink it, a teacher assigns a rated R movie to the class I have to explain that, a male classmate wants to meet for lunch to go over classwork or study and I have to explain why it would be improper. I never had to fight all of these forces before, I was bundled and safe in my home. Thanks to Kevin, who kept me out of the world. I can see how some people can let the world come home with them, into their homes, their safe place, their marriage, and into their families and cause such deep grief for their family. I wish it didn't happen, but I can see how it could.

At just under 9 years of marriage I don't have all the answers. Kevin and I have our problems too. Everyone does. But letting the world in, letting these problems become more important or larger than our marriage isn't an option. It does frighten me to see it happening to so many of our friends though. I hear of their divorces and I analyze the reasons and try to find those things in my marriage and remove them to protect us. Maybe this won't be a lesson I have to learn for myself, this will be a lesson I can learn from other people.

I just cannot imagine a life without my partner, my best friend, my lover, my protector, my husband. I don't know...maybe it's our eternal perspective...

Blue Eyes

Jayden has turned into such a little girl. Her face is thinning, her body is taking more shape, and she's walking everywhere, she doesn't really look like a baby at all anymore, but a little girl with the biggest blue eyes you'll ever see!

Pracitice Kid

I feel fairly confident of my parent skills as far as raising a four year old and a one year old go. I've got that stuff down. Temper Tantrums - ignored, potty training - non issue it'll happen sometime, Biting - it'll pass, Not Sharing - it'll pass too...I understand these things, and I accept them, and feel capable of handling them. What I don't feel capable of handling is my tween.

Jakey. At 9 years old I just don't know what to do with him. He's not a child, not a teen, he just doesn't fit into any category. He is beginning to have a social life, beginning to need deodorant, beginning to be super emotional because he's not even sure what he wants, he's just so - different. But so much like me at his age. He wants to spend all his time with his friends and resists family time, but does go with it because he knows what it means to me.

Is it like this with the first always? I feel like I've never really known what to do with him, like he's our practice model and I think sometimes we really messed up!

Physically he's just so big lately! He's just a hair under 5 feet tall, weighs 80 lbs, wears big shoes and bigger clothes than ever. Just started wearing deodorant and just started caring about his looks intensely.

Emotionally he's confused about how he feels and overwhelmed by it. He cries easily out of frustration but is angry because he's frustrated and doesn't know why. He's also super happy to super sad super fast.

Man, this parenting stuff is hard. I thought lack of sleep, poopy diapers, and breastfeeding were difficult. Those things are a breeze compared to parenting someone into an adult! I am sure things will just get more interesting around here as he gets older!

My Eye! My Eye!

Ouch. I have pink eye. :(

No one else has it...

Just me...

Ugh...

What the Heck?

Ok, so who watches Ghost Whisperer?

Well Fridays I LIVE for getting home and showered, JUST in time to relax and watch it while I nurse Jayden to sleep. I get home, showered, settled...and OH. MY. GOSH. Don't read any further if you haven't seen it yet!

Melinda's husband dies?!?! I hated it when they killed off Angela (her BFF from the first few seasons) and when they let Jay Mohr leave...but now her awesome, cute hubby is dead? I just can't take it!

From a medical perspective I was annoyed because the odds for dying from a blood clot are so small...and where the heck were his TED hose? Yeah, we just did a unit on pre and post surgical care...Anyhow, I was SO mad when he started to explain the clot to her! So mad!

The ONLY way the writers can soothe my pain is to bring back Jay Mohr's character for Melinda to find love again (actually I think she is somewhat in love with him already...)

Am I the only one who was disappointed?

Ugh, the Kids Ran Away With Our Election....

I am saddened that McCain did not win last night. I don't think the world is going to end or anything because Barack Obama won the presidency, and I don't think he's going to do a poor job even, I just wish McCain had won. The thing that actually bothers me about the whole thing is that it's the young crowd that voted him in and I really feel put off by their reasoning. After seeing the msypace's of a lot of 18, 19, and 20 year olds I think they either just voted for him because he is black, or because he is cool, or because he is young(er than McCain), or whatever but no substantial reasons like, "I voted for him because of his sound economic policy" or "because he has a better healthcare plan" or whatever. There are ADULTS that did cite those things and their vote weighs on me, I can respect it and be glad that they got their choice for president, it's the teens, the naive kids, who chose our president though and it just bothers me for some reason.

Sure right now none of them has the potential to make over $250,000 a year, but that's narrow minded to think that taxing people over $250,000 isn't going to hurt them. I pray this tax plan doesn't pass into law because Kevin works for a small business that would be DEVESTATED under this tax plan. And when your employer gets devestated, so do you.

I'm glad so many people will hopefully get healthcare under Obama's plan...I just hope I'm not the one footing the bill. We can barely afford our own insurance.

I hope Obama restores the world's view of our country.

I hope he can find a way to safely end the war. I don't think it'll be done in 18 months, but good luck to him.

I just hope everything is ok. And I hope we raise the voting age, and while we're at it, the age to enlist in the military. After having a 19 year old cousin discharged from the military (less than honorably) because he honestly didn't really REALIZE the ramifications of joining the military during a time of war and getting scared to go on his tour of duty, I can say that these kids (18-20 year olds) just aren't prepared to make adult choices like joining the military or voting for president. They are short sighted.

Heck, even Jakey voted for Obama at school. Why? Because the kid campaigning for Obama offered him candy...

Stoked!

The premiere of the Twilight movie is just a two weeks and a few days away (two weeks from this Thursday) and so yesterday I realized, "oh, I should buy tickets!" I searched online and found out that one theater in town is sold out already!!!! But the one I want to go to still has tickets. Now, yesterday was the Sabbath so I had to face the delimma: would there be any tickets left for me if I waited until the next day? I had to go with it, and I actually prayed I'd be able to get a ticket on Monday. This morning as soon as I woke up, I hopped on Fandango and scored three tickets (me, my mom, and my 13 year old sister in law) to the MIDNIGHT RELEASE!! SCORE!

In other unrelated news, Kevin, who thinks I'm nuts for going to a midnight release of a movie, will be going to the midnight release of Wrath of the Lich King, the World of Warcraft expansaion. Yeah, who's the bigger dork??????

So, here is the delayed birthday post!
