Disney's Frozen Theme Photo Book

I'm working on an amazing new photo book for a client based on Disney's Frozen, Oh.. this is the best project ever! The client wants to have the character mix and mingle with her children in the book, so I've made a sample page with stock photos for her approval and I'm all ready to go! It'll take me about a week of so to finish the book and then she's going to have an amazing custom photo book. And of course I had to share it with you all. The Character were purchased through Etsy and she sent them to me to create with. These pages are perfect for skating picures, "Frozen" birthday parties, "Frozen" Halloween costumes and so much more.

Printing Project Life Photo Books

This year for my DD's Freshman Year Book I used this template by Valorie Wibben

It is a great jumping off point because I like the different shapes.

For this page I started off with the template in the lower right. When I start I pace the larger photos first since they are the most important and then I work around that. This month was really picture heavy since there was a lot going on. I pulled some digital elements from Glitz Designs that I had in my digi stock and it added just a little bit of fun. I make my own little elements to fill in  the open spaces and that it.

When filling in open space there are ton of options I use.

Here I use a clipping mask and I can make the digital card or paper as small or large to fit the space, like in the June banner. I enlarged a digi card and added a digital alpha over the top and finished it off with a funky arrow.

. 

I created the Stanford banner by removing the background from the logo and added it over another paper from the Glitz collection called "Uncharted Waters" it available at Jessica Sprague.

This time I'm printing at Adoramapix.com since the entire book in done in Photoshop. The printing is on photo paper and the pages are lay flat which means I don't have any lost areas in the creases of a book.

Digital Project Life Photo Books!

This year I decided to do something a little different. Since my DD is in High School I've decides to switch my calender to the ACADEMIC calendar. It just made sense to me. When my DD was little our life centered around things like Easter, Christmas and lots of little birthday parties....oh how things have changed now things are centered around back to school, homecoming, student body elections etc. I find that after 15 Christmas and Easter layouts, those other pages are a welcome change....of course we still celebrate standard holidays, but it's different. The last few years we've travel during the holidays. Our life revolves around the academic calender more than ever. And it fun for a change!

Scrapbook Artist for Hire!

Oh, I have been so neglectful of this blog and the guilt has finally brought me to here! So... I know many of you come to visit for the Silhouette info which it great! I'm so glad you have all been enjoying those tutorials and I'm happy to answer specific question but please leave me your email address so I can reply. I can't post all the answers so an email address would really help.

So I wanted to share what new adventures I've been up to and some of my recent projects. One thing that's new is I've been doing photobooks for people mainly though an online photobook company. I've done everything from Baby books to Wedding albums. I've also been converting peoples paper scrapbooks to digital, that is a big job! I had one customer with 90 photo albums that we scanned and placed in photobooks and I did a huge amount a photo editing since many of the photos were from the 80's and the image quality was not very good. Then we went and did a few new theme albums pulling some of here favorite images and we add scanned memorabilia as well.

I've been doing books for myself too. Right now I'm finishing up my DD's freshman year of high school scrapbook and here are an example of some of the pages. I've combined both Project life style pages and more artistic layer pages similar to what I would have done with paper.

this last one is the book's cover. 

I really like the combinations of the fun, bight, phone images with the single photo, artistic, scrapbook pages. It really covers all the bases both artistically and functionally. All these pages are done in Photoshop and uploaded to the Photobook website.

Project Life: Documenting a Week When You're Sick.

Every March around the first my daughter gets sick, I don't know why, but here we go again. My DD was home for 4 days with a fever so there wasn't much going on. So what do you document when your home sick with your child?

So here are some suggestions. 

1. Home remedies, do you have a special tea you brew or some other special foods. For my daughter when she's sick the only thing she wants to eat are grilled cheese sandwiches and my special smoothies, especially if she has a sore throat. 

2. Trips to the doctor. 

3. Things that bring comfort. Even my 13 year old reaches for one of her old stuffed animals when she isn't feeling fell.

4. Entertainment. My daughter loves to watch movies and play crazy eights when she starts to feel a bit better.

5. Memories of a previous illness. I remember when my DD got Croup and we had to call an ambulance because it got so bad. No fun but if you haven't documented a story from the past you can tell the story now.

6. Tell a story about when you were little and what your Mom did or didn't do for you. It's a great opportunity to pass down a story or tell how a ritual got started.
7. Take photos of the stacks of Kleenex tissues or bottle of cold medicines. 

8. Remember to take a picture when the cold or flu passes, capture the healthy glow coming back!

My Project Life Pinterest Board

Well it been a hell of a week and not in a good way. There were so many fire to put out, I exhausted myself and afterwards I slept for about thirteen hours. Oh, the joys for being a Wife and Mother. But back to the important thinks like scrapping! So, I have a couple of things to share with you. first of all a quickie update, I received a couple of comments about not finding things that I mentioned or listed in a post. The first one being Pixlr-o-matic which I mistakenly called Pixelomatic or something like that, it's available for both the iphone and android and you can find it in the respective stores. In addition, I generally posted everything on my Pinterest board and I've added a button to my blog to make it easy to find. The other missing information was regarding some of the PL (project life) digital products I use and again, if I forget to but a link on my blog you can generally find it on my Pinterest board. Every week (sometimes daily) I shop for new products and post them to my board so I can find it later when I need it.

Speaking of PL shopping on my my favorite places to shop (besides Loriwhitlock.com) is Studio DD it's part of Designer Digitals and I generally feel compelled to buy anything designed my her. And although digital product is very reasonably priced sometimes I exceed my monthly budget and I can't buy anymore. So I wanted to try my hand at designing/scraplifting some of the designs Kayleigh has done for Studio DD and I'm really happy with the results I used the new Templates from Lori Whitlock and her new basics line and here is the results. This looks so simple why oh why did it take like 8 hours to do!!!

I added the photos for Lori's blog post but I designed these for a two page project life layout. Thank you Kayleigh for all the inspiration.

What Do You Do with Digital Scrapbook Pages?

I had a great question the other day from somebody who is new to digital scrapbooking. She wanted to know what I do with my designs once they are done.

I generally do one of three things with my digital pages. The first is I wait til the end of the year and I collect pages that have to do with everything we have done this year as a family, vacations, school, weekend whatever I have scraped that relates to the current year and I have a book made of them. Many times I go back and add extra journaling because I want to write to my daughter about the year and what I felt about this year of her life. I love to see the books lined up on her book shelf and it's fun to so back and see what we did that year. The books are so light compared to my huge, heavy traditional scrapbooks and I find them much more likely to be enjoyed and I use them as a reference to help me remember what year things happened.

When you want to have a book made there are many options, I think it generally has to do with personal preference and what styles are available. A couple of the most popular that I've tried are Shutterfly and Snapfish. I preferred the quality of Shutterfly. This is a great time of year to order books many sites offer substantial savings. For anyone looking to see the options compared, I've found a review of many here  the books are geared towards photographers and others but, this will give you a very through comparison.

The second option for me is a create a hybrid page. There are many examples here on my blog and I've gone back and created a hybrid label so you can see examples. A few of my all time favorite pages are included in this category. When I create a hybrid page I print out the background I've created using Photoshop and I print it out in either a 12 x 12 size or 8 1/2 x 11 size, I work in both formats. Next I print the papers and elements I use on Epson paper and I print my photos on Epson photo paper. You can see all the products on the Favorite Things tab on my blog the link is here. I'm going to add the photo books to this list in the next couple of days.

The last things I do with my pages has more to do with the fact that I'm married to a very "techie" guy. I have a product called Apple TV that plays photos and music with cool effects. But is basically a slideshow and I love to share my pages this way my family gets together over the holidays and I show my year in review slide show and everyone gets to see anything they missed holidays, special events, new photos and scrapbook pages. There are companies that are user friendly like iPhoto for mac users or Windows Movie Makers which allow you to play them on your TV,  iPhone, iPad or similar. They can be uploaded to YouTube or similar and I really enjoy seeing my pages like this and I highly recommending giving this a try! You can see one I made here.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial

I have a new layout to share, this one was is for Paper Crafter's Corner and the team was asked to create a Holiday design and I fell in love with this Winter Wonderland Kit from Jady Day Studios. Many of my scrapbook friends have been surprised by my passion for digital scrapbooking that's taken me over the past year and I'm quite surprised myself. But to be honest, for me it was a natural evolution of my need to keep learning new things. Plus there are some really cool effects you can do digitally that you can't do with paper, scissors and glue.

One of the cool effects on this page is the knit paper, I created an overlay with another print from the kit to make it look like a patterned sweater. I really like the final look!.

Here's how I did it.
The first step is to open a new file at 300dpi this one is 12 x 12.
Step two. Open the Winter Wonderland knit paper, next open the snow scene print and make sure it's over the knit paper in the layers file.
the last step is to adjust the layers styles, I chose darken but a few of them worked. You can use your down arrow to flip through the different styles to see what works best for you!

Websters Pages Digital Scrapbooking

It's a cold rainy day in Los Angeles and I've been busy creating winter layouts, so I was craving a little sunshine. I decided to breakout some of the beautiful Webster Pages digital kits that I have and create something soft, warm and sunny, like early summer. I recently was taking about the house my DD was born in and how I spent my pregnancy tending a flower garden I was creating to bring her home to, when she was born. I'm definitely a nester and this page was about sharing that memory with her. Maybe someday when she has a baby, she will look back at this and know how I felt about having her.

Fall Digital Scrapbooking

Fall is my favorite time of year and it's one of the reasons I miss living on the East Coast. When I did this page I started just like a traditional scrapbook page, choosing the background paper and adding more layers of paper (the notebook edge piece) and then the circles and clock. It's really not that different a process, the difference is the added dimensions of transparency and light. There are some really magical things that happen when you start playing with the layer styles. The fun part is some of the flowers in the layout are photos I took, either from the garden or my own Prima stash. The girls are model stock from deviantart. I worked about 12 hours on this piece partly, I think because I'm still learning, but I enjoy every minute of it.

Photoshop Digital Scrapbooking: Lighting

I was writing yesterday how important lighting is and today I thought I'd share an easy tip for lighting a chandelier or other light fixtures in a layout. 

This chandelier was lit but it really didn't stand out much against the dark background and didn't have much of an impact on the image.

Before

So the first step was to create an inner glow to help boost the brightness of the bulbs and the fixture.

 Here I used a very light yellow and a small soft brush and stamped over the top of the bulbs to give them a soft glowing effect. I also added a drop shadow to help it pop even more.

Digital Photoshop Scrapbook Tutorial: Alter an Element

I want to share with you how to make a flat element look like an epoxy or gloss element like I did in this new Halloween layout for Lori Whitlock's blog.

First here's a list of supplies used

To make an flat element embossed or glossy, you begin my opening an element (.png) in Photoshop.

Next click the FX symbol on the bottom of the layers palette and the dialog box will open. Here are the setting I used.

Feel free to play around with the settings to see the different options and how they effect the different elements. When you are done click OK. If you want to add this to a page merge the visible layers, so you can drag it to another page.

This technique can also be used for elements already placed on the layout.

For Silhouette Cameo users: Save the element and open it up in Silhouette Studio, trace, print and cut.
