A Few Menu Ideas...

First Up:

in which I will probably try corn tortillas because I like the flavor and texture better--but Jason prefers flour--so maybe half and half!

Next:

Yummy--can't wait to try it!

And Last (from Nicole)

Oh, and you can't forget a quick dessert. Put the kids to bed and have yourself a bit of cake...

Okay, and one more...

I'll have to look for the cinnamon chips--but it might be a fun adventure!

Movie Night Friday

We usually have Movie Night Friday at our house. After which the children are wired and crazy. Upon yelling for them to all go brush their teeth, Mialee proclaimed, "Last one there is a cotton egg!" Everyone went a-runnin. After all, you wouldn't want to be a cotton egg.

A Few Faces

Cutie-face Kiella

Pouty-face Aiddie

The Baby Crawls!

I decided I had better get Kiella's little worm-crawl on video before it was too late. When you watch this you'll see that crawl. But then imagine my surprise when the she decided to try again and started crawling for real!

BTW--this video was captured with the camera that I broke. Thanks to my husband for coming home and calmly fixing it for me.

The Good News and the Bad News

So I needed to make breadsticks today for a funeral.

So I did. And the good news is they turned out great. And then I went to nurse Baby and came back to a very incomplete pan of breadsticks.

The Bad News is the two-year-old helped herself. The Good News is that I was gonna make another pan anyway, for us to eat. The Bad News is that I burnt it.

So I had to make another pan...after I had already done all the dishes. The good news is that I while making soup to go with the breadsticks I got to use my insanely awesome veggie chopper that slices carrots like nobody's business.

The Bad News is that I dropped my camera taking a picture of the insanely awesome veggie chopper.

And now it only takes pictures like this... And I lost the other camera at Disneyland a while back.

The good news is that we have the modern technology of telephones so I could call my husband and tell him the bad news and not have to witness the rolling eyes and the clenched jaw (cuz imagining it in my head is not as bad). I don't like it when he rolls his eyes at me like dropping things is a sign of intelligence. It's not. It happens to the best of us. And sometimes it happens more to some of us than others, despite our best efforts. That, and we lose stuff. I know, I know, it's annoying, but when you've had to live with it as long as I have you learn that sometimes stuff just happens. Stuff like dropping stuff and losing stuff. If I could control it I would--somewhat like if he could keep rhythm I'm sure he would.

I don't have any more good news. Cuz knowing how much a new camera costs is not good news. And knowing that I don't have any moneys to buy a new camera is not very good news either. I guess it might be good news that I am willing to save my moneys for a while so I can buy myself a purty new camera. Yeah, we'll go with that.

Silly-ism By Nikell

What if a dog came in our house and peed?
Then a human would slip in it.
That would be silly.

Our Duty is to Walk and Walk and Walk and Walk

At this time of new year, our house turns into a house of gathering statistics, monitoring and tracking actions, and refining goals. Now some of you may nod your head in agreement, like this is normal and I assure you that at our house, it is far from normal thanks to my over-zealous, goal-seeking, tracking information-loving husband. But it's not a bad thing. Exhausting, at times, but not bad. He tends to inspire us to be better.

And so this week began our trek to a better life. Get up and exercise at 6:45. Get the kids all up at 7:30 and read scriptures--giving them time to get ready for school and practice piano too. And, my biggest mountain, be positive in the process. Daily activities commence including 3-5 veggies a day and a productive nap. Meal planning and trip planning to cut down on food and gas expenses. Everyone helps with dinner dishes and make lunches for the next day. Getting ready for bed and reading by 8:00 pm...And meanwhile keep on top of laundry, dishes, and other household duties.

And I've done okay, even considering my three youngest crying day in and day out. Today, though, I just about lost it. It was more than I had in me to get the older girls homework checked, breakfast fed, piano practiced, while Aiddie continually yelled "Want You!" and Nikell moaned in a heap over a trace of gluten she consumed last night. By the time the two older girls left I was in the red (overheating, exploding...you know, all the things RED signifies). So I tucked the younger two in a blanket on the couch with Curious George, laid Ky-Ky in the floor and retreated to a far corner of the house for some reflection and inspiration.

And I began to put myself back together while pondering on a lesson that has been repeatedly trying to make it's way into my thick skull. It started with Jason teaching the boys at church and his focus ended up being something about Becoming what you want to be by deciding what that is and setting goals right know. For instance, if you want to be an Engineer then you need to plan on going to college. And if you're going to go to college then you need to plan on decent grades, or better and that means doing homework right now. So by deciding to be an Engineer, you plan on doing homework every night in high school.

Then I read a theory online that put forth that you already are what you are trying to become. Meaning, I think, that if you are already reading your scriptures and having FHE in hopes of becoming a good mother or father, then you already are. That by taking the steps to become something, you essentially become that thing.

Then I heard a short talk about pioneers. About how despite their horrific trials and hardships, the majority of their time was probably just normal everyday life. Life spent loading up wagons, checking supplies, and walking at a slow oxen-driven pace until night hit and they unhitched, watered, supped, prepared for bed and slept. Only to begin again the next day. This talk highlighted the fact that their pace was slow. That even though it would have been nice to hurry-up and get it done, they could not. They had to endure and walk and walk and walk until their journey was through. And so it is with out lives. It would be nice to hurry up and become "Celestial" but that's not how it works. Our duty is to walk and walk and walk and walk until our journey is through.

And so, be it long-winded, I begin another day of walking. Another day of being positive. Another day of deciding that I will be a celestial mother. Another day of scriptures. Another day of praising my children. Another day of laundry. Another day of rejoicing in my baby's slobbery kisses. Another day of holding my "want you" child...And in doing so I am what I already want to be. I am walking and walking because I have decided what I want to do with my life and it is now and here. For by small and simple things are great things brought to pass (or something like that :)).

Happy New Year

How's that new year going for you? At our house a new year means Jason getting all giddy and excited about making 1.27 million goals, rehashing the budget 3.7 billion times (until it's just right...down to the penny), and desperately trying to get his wife (that would be me) to join in on the "fun." Not that I don't like goals. I do. I just bristle at all the goals people make every new year that last about half a week. Why make 'em if you're not really committed. So I don't make them unless I am REALLY committed, and even then I usually don't share them. Call me private. :) And, actually, this year Jason's excitement has rubbed off a bit. I am excited to get back on track. And one track that I have been derailed of is menu planning and financial budgeting (is there another kind?). And in thinking about it, the two directly correlate. If I plan my menu for the week then I can get by with far less grocery store visits and thus spend less grocery money and gas money. So I am re-dedicated to planning my menu. So, I will share my menu with you for the week, BUT I am going to ask you to share your favorite recipe with me. What's your one go-to meal? What's your family-favorite? I want more ideas. My goal is to not only plan my menu but then actually keep a running log of what we really do eat. Then I will have ideas and reality to look at for future use. So here's my menu. If you want any recipes let me know and I'll see if I can round some up for you.

Monday: Sour Cream Enchiladas with broccolli
Tuesday: Potato Soup with peas and toast
Wednesday: Tacos with green beans
Thursday: Simple Sandwiches with mandarine oranges
Friday: Dinner with a friend
Saturday: Rice Pudding/Rice and peaches
Sunday: Poppyseed Chicken and green beans

I even worked my way through some coupons and developed a grocery list. Somebody hose me down cuz I AM ON FIRE!

Oh, and here's a recipe I want to try...

Chicken Noodle Casserole

2 cans Cream of Chicken Soup
1 C. sour cream (8 oz.)
3 C. cooked fettuccine noodles
3-4 C. cooked cubed chicken
Stove Top Stuffing mix- Chicken Flavor
¾ cube butter or margarine
2 C. chicken broth or bouillon cubes

Mix first soup and sour cream together in a 9x13” pan. Stir in cooked noodles and chicken. Sprinkle Stove top stuffing mix over top (bread and seasoning). Pour melted butter and chicken broth over top of stuffing mix. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Now don't forget to leave me some ideas!
