Bored?

Are you BORED?

Brent has an idea to get you laughing....

all you need is a little TAPE

And a little Ayla Bug.

This is what happens when I am not at home.
Notice the licorice face as well. No wonder why they don't mind when I leave.

And here is another one.
A BOX, STRING,STICK?

And you too can make a MAGPIE TRAP.

The Power of Prayer

So I don't very often get all spiritual on my blog but I can't go without sharing our experience of this last week. After all this blog is to record the things of our lives and I would hate to forget this one.

We drove home to Colorado from Utah on Tuesday. I had driven there on the 8th with the 3 girls for Jen's stepdaughters wedding the next day and then Brent and Hunter flew one way to meet us on the 17th so Brent could hunt with his brothers and dad. I had left the timer on in my car and a few days before we left for home the timer showed that I had driven a total of 21 hours from the time I left Colorado Springs.

So we had a rough start getting out of Brigham. It seemed that we would just never be ready to leave for one reason or another. Elsie needed to eat. Someone had to go to the bathroom. We had to go get treats and a movie Brent had promised. Then Ayla threw up on baba and that had to be washed. Then we couldn't find Sienna's baba and thought it was in Amber's van but we couldn't get a hold of her, but finally tracked her down at Walmart(thank goodness it was Brigham) just to find the blanket wasn't there. So we went back to the Morrill's to find it on the bathroom floor in plain sight. Finally on the road we looked at each other like phew, we did, we got out of there at 11:30, 2 and a half hours after we had hoped. Well it was then that our luggage rack on top started hitting the top of the car. Brent pulled over and adjusted it. We were off. Nope, it did it again once we went over 50. He ended up stopping 2 more times and the second time moved some stuff around inside that finally did the trick.

Well with this rough start I guess it made me think we ought to say a prayer. I would like to say that we always pray before a trip(we will now) but these trips to me are as common to me as a trip to the grocery store(seriously thanks to my great husband who knows how much I hate that task) so it often slips my mind. Well this time we did remember and we prayed that we would be able to have a safe, peaceful ride home and that Ayla would get feeling better. Ayla did throw up two more times but both were contained so I felt blessed there(Hunter threw up when he was that age on our move to Ohio and it was not a thing to make for a enjoyable ride).

We made good time and the kids were good as always in the car and we got home and went to bed. We were sick the next day so I didn't go anywhere until Thursday morning. I drove to Chipeta which is less than half a mile away to drop Sienna off at preschool. A friend called me and offered to bring her home for me so I wouldn't have to take sick Elsie out. Then that night Brent took Hunter to Karate. On the way there. Less than a block from our house the gears wouldn't shift and the car started making odd noises and the engine light came on. Brent came home and told me that he thought the transmission was going out. What? We got the Yukon when we were in Utah late July. It had 5,000 miles on it. How could it be doing that? He took it in Friday morning and yep, the transmission is shot. I am grateful it is under warranty and that we have a rental car for the ten days that I am without it. It makes me realize how much I really liked my car. More than I would have wanted to admit but also it has made me realize that I am just grateful to have a car and a way to get around.

So back to the point of the story. When Brent told me that it would need a new transmission it made me instantly grateful that our prayer was answered and that we were able to make it safely home those 615 miles before our car stopped working. Had it happened in the middle of Wyoming with 2 of the 4 kids miserably sick, it would have been a nightmare. I truly feel that we were watched over and helped to get home before that last mile put the transmission out. I am so thankful for prayer and for the blessing and protection my family received this last week.

Chipeta Sock Hop '08

We went to the school Sock Hop on October 3. This is one of our favorite school activities each year. They have a dj and hot dogs, cotton candy, glow necklaces and everyone wears poodle skirts and jeans and it is a blast. Ayla loves to dance and is not afraid to shake it. I wish I had thought to take the video camera because I garantee it would have made you laugh to see it. Sienna and Kayla were in heaven together and Hunter was off with Wade and true to boy form would not let me get a picture. I love Chipeta and am so grateful that my kids have such a fantastic school to attend.

Canning, lots of canning.

Brent and I made Freezer Jam back in August. Raspberry/Peach Freezer Jam and it is very delicious. Well the reason I mention this is because the only kind of jam I have ever made is the freezer variety. Well a cute little lady in my ward has a crab apple tree and she offered the apples to anyone that wanted them. I LOVE crabapple jelly and was so excited to learn to make it myself. So Amy and I took her ladder and went to pick the crab apples. She says on her blog that we used our mad tree climbing skills but that was all her. She was up there chucking them down on the sheet and we thought we wouldn't have enough to make a batch for each of us but we did. I think that a large portion of the fun in canning is the harvesting. I have so many great memories of picking strawberries, raspberries, apples, and pumpkins with dear friends in Ohio. I think the memories makes the food even sweeter when when you eat it. The process was fun and a ton easier than I would have thought.

I think the peaches uprooted some buried homemaker something or other and now I am addicted to canning.

While I was in Utah for Craig's daughter, Nicole's, wedding, Jen, Katie and I went a little crazy with the canning and we had a blast doing it. It really makes it so much fun when you can do it together and laugh and talk while doing something so productive. It makes me feel like I am contributing to my family and making a difference. And yes, I admit that I love seeing all those jars lined up perfectly.

My grandma gave us tons of old jars, close to 100, 2 steam sealers, a dehydrator, and a pressure cooker. It was so fun going through her storage room and finding all the little treasures she had there and I think she got a kick out of seeing us so excited over them all. The spiders were a little creepy but hey it is October.

So Jen and Katie wanted me to show them how to do the peaches so we did that first. We
put up 50 quarts of peaches not counting the 5 quarts that broke(they were very old bottles). Then we were sick of peaches but still had so many left so we made raspberry peach jam but the cooked kind which I am excited about. That way I was able to bring it home with me and also it makes for better gifts. And then we did the Morrill's salsa. It was a bit challenging to get the right feel for it and the right ingredients because Gaylene, Amber(who was using Grandpa Morrill's recipe) and Kelly were all telling me different measurements but in the end we kind of went with an in between thing and the results were great. It was so much fun doing it that we decided we want to can every year together. I love my sisters and it felt really great to do something so positive with them. They both have pictures and I hope to steal them as soon as they post them but, sadly, I forgot to take my camera with me on my trip( I realized this 20 minutes into the 9 hour drive but was not going to turn around).

Okay so next I went to Brigham and Amber showed me how to do grape juice. She and Normy even went with me and helped me pick the grapes that Grandma Morrill had arranged for me. Brent was, as always, wondering(and complaining) about where we were going to fit all this stuff(I went shopping at the Downeast Home Clearance center with Katie and got the kids their own suitcase for 10 bucks and some cute clothes for 2 and 3 bucks) but, as always, he finds room. It was an interesting ride home. We had gnats and flys flying around our heads but it smelled like grapes despite Aylas 2 upchucks.

So when we got home we borrowed a friends juicer and made grape juice, Hence Amber's comment on grapes.

We ended up with 28 quarts which is way more than I expected. And if you have never had homemade grape juice then you are surely missing out. And if you have never experienced the sense of pleasure and yes, I will again admit, the pride from canning, then you really ought to try it. It makes me want to grow a garden and be more resourceful in other ways as well.
