Isang linggo na ang nakakalipas nang mapanood ko sa sinehan ang pelikulang mula kay Jerrold Tarog--- ang Heneral Luna. Nabanggit ko sa isang komento sa isang social networking site na nainis ako pagkapatos mapanood ang pelikula.
Hindi na ako makikisawsaw sa isyu na tila naging highlight ng pagpapalabas nito: ang tinanong ng isang estudyante (at naging komento ng napakaraming sumakay sa isyu) ukol sa hindi pagtayo ng karakter ni Apolinario Mabini sa buong kahabaan ng pelikula.
Inaamin ko na hindi rin ako gaanong maalam sa kasaysayan ng Pilipinas. Kung mayroon man sa napakaraming pakikipaglaban natin sa kalayaan ang pinaka-tumatak sa isipan ko na itinuro sa akin sa paaralan, ito na sigurado ang mga panahon nina Gat. Jose Rizal at Andres Bonifacio--- ang huli bilang nakapanig sa mas mabilis at mas maingay na kilusan habang ang una ay pinili ang mas tahimik na paghihimagsik laban sa mga dayuhan.
Si Heneral Antonio Luna ay mas nakilala ko lamang ngayong napanood ko ang pelikula. Sa likod ng pangalan na nababasa ko lang sa mga aklat-kasaysayan noon, tulad nina Apolinario Mabini, mas napakilala ng pelikula ang karakter at paninindigan ng mga bayani noong panahon ng unang republika ng Pilipinas. At hindi lang mga bayani ang nailantad ng kwentong ito kundi maging ang mga maituturing nating "nagtaksil" sa inang bayan.
Maganda ang produksyon sa kabuuan. Hindi nakakabagot, hindi nakakainip. Sa sarili ko lang na pananaw, mas epektibo marahil na naitawid ang mensahe kung hindi gaanong nahaluan ng 'komedya' ang pagsasakatuparan ng pelikula. Marahil ay pilyo lang talaga ang bayaning heneral pero obserbasyon ko sa mga kasabay kong nanood (na karamihan ay mag-aaral), tila naaagaw ang atensyon nila ng parteng nagpapatawa kaysa malalim na mensahe na dapat itawid sa mga manonood. Hindi na rin ako magpapaka-teknikal. Para sa akin, sapat nang naipakita ang mga "dugo" na dumanak maging ang ilang ulo na "sumabog" para mailarawan kung gaano ka-grabe ang sitwasyon sa panahon ng gera. Hindi na mahalaga kung gaano ito ka-natural kapag nakita o sinuring mabuti.
Sa pelikula ay hinangaan ko nang lubusan ang paninindigan ni Heneral Luna. Kung paano niya sinasagupa nang buong tapang ang bulok na sistema ng kasalukuyang gobyerno ng bansa. Kung gaano kasigasig niyang nilalabanan ang makasariling ugali at pagkakani-kaniya ng mga Pilipino na silang dapat unang nagkakaisa para sa kapakanan ng sariling bayan.
Ito ang dahilan kung bakit ako nainis pagkatapos mapanood ang produksyon--- dahil ang sakit nating mga Pilipino mula pa noong unang republika (o marahil mas nauna pang panahon) ay siyang sakit pa rin natin ngayon at tila mas lalo pang lumala. Ano nga ba ang magtutulak sa atin para ganap na maisulong ang kapakanan ng buong bansa natin at hindi tayo magkani-kaniya? "Negosyo o kalayaan? Bayan o sarili?"--- ang mga katanungang hindi madaling sagutin ng karamihan sa ating mga Pilipino. Marahil madaling sabihin ang pipiliin pero ibang usapan na naman kung ito ay gagawin na. Sa ganitong mga pelikula ay pansamantalang napupukaw ang damdamin nating makabayan pero paano natin pananatilihin ang alab ng damdaming ito hanggang sa makamit na nga natin ang isinisigaw ng alab na iyon sa kalooban natin? Madaling mag-isip. Madaling mangarap. Pero gaano nga ba kahirap isakatuparan ang pangarap natin bilang isang lahi at isang bansa?

in a few minutes, it's gonna be the 8th month of the year already. July seemed to be a long month but i am too busy to even notice how it flew so fast. July marks the start of the 'working' fiscal year. i thought we're not going to be busy at work this passing month since budget per department is still being approved. but no, i was definitely wrong. a series of opportunities opened up for me this month. first, i confirmed my promotion from an officer to an assistant manager. this month also gave me the opportunity to spearhead three events, two of which have media invitees. according to the execs' feedback, 'job well done' on the major events. well, thanks to my colleagues who made each event a success! speaking of promotion, it wasn't only i who have been promoted. Arn, our web & digital senior in the department also got a promotion. so we gave our team mates a dinner treat at Conti's one July evening.
Family Time Is Quality Time
in a week, i spend 9 hours at work for 6 days, plus a couple of extra hours daily for travel to and from the office. that leaves me more or less an even 12 hours a day to spend with my family or a total of 72 hours for 6 days. i try my best to squeeze in quality time with my two girls whenever i'm off from work. this month, i'm just a happy dad to treat my little girl (and the big girl as well) into the big screen twice. following the movie Monsters University which we watched last month, i took two nights this month to take my two girls in the movie house and see Despicable Me 2 & Turbo. Even if i'm already tired after work and just slept it out the whole duration of the movie, who cares? simply seeing your little girl giggling in joy everytime i am awakened by the moviegoers' laughs is simply PRICELESS. i can always catch those on DVD anyway. but your kid experiencing 3D (kid) movies with both her mom and dad is something that can not be replaced by anything.
Iglesia Ni Cristo: Countdown to the Centennial
July is always a special month for me, for my family, for all our brethren in the church. July 27, 2013 marks the 99th year anniversary of the Church of Christ (Iglesia Ni Cristo) all over the world. The church, as a yearly devotion, has celebrated it through thanksgiving worship services and thru the missionary work dubbed as "Kabayan Ko, Kapatid Ko." The missionary work resulted to hundreds of thousand people newly enlisted to undergo indoctrination through Bible studies. All brethren are excited and we're all looking forward to the church's centennial celebration. God's love for His church never fails. He's continuously keeping His promise to His nation. If one just sees how big the Iglesia Ni Cristo is today, he/she can not imagine how humble its beginning was. The Iglesia Ni Cristo story should be seen next year to its centennial movie offering, "Ang Sugo." The film, as i understand, will relate three generations of the church from its humble beginnings in 1914 up to where it is today through God's guidance and blessings. The movie is to star Albert Martinez as Ka Felix Manalo, Richard Gomez as Ka Erdy, and Bong Revilla as the church current Executive Minister, Bro. Eduardo V. Manalo.
Hindi ako movie buff. Kung may papanoorin man ako sa wide screen, sisiguraduhin kong gustung-gusto ko itong panoorin kahit pa hindi ito ang pinaka-pinag-uusapang palabas. otherwise, aabangan ko na lang sa dvd.
kung ako ang tatanungin, mas nawiwili akong panoorin ang ilang indie films kaysa mainstream. lower budget, lesser known artists, but well-thought-of stories. panalo pag socially-related ang plot ng kwento--- sumasalamin sa totoong buhay ng lipunan. hindi man ikaw yung artista, ramdam mo na bahagi ka nito.
hindi ako nabigo na makita muli ito sa isang pelikula. kwento sa isang lugar, ang katotohanan ng sistemang lumalamon dito, ang pagpupunyagi ng ilang nilalang na mabago ang bulok na sistema, at ang pag-asa na pilit iniilawan sa loob ng madilim na kinalalagyan. sa lugar na kung hindi ka marunong makisayaw sa uso, nanaisin mo na lang mawala. pero dahil sa determinasyon ng mga tao na baguhin ang indak ng karaniwang tagpo sa looban, pilit na igigiling ang pagod nang katawan sa saliw ng bagong musika.
totoo ang kasabihan: "habang may buhay, may pag-asa."
ito ang kwento ng mga taong biktima ng bulok na sistema, ngunit dahil sa katatagan ay umasa at nagkaisang isayaw ang pagbabago para MAKALAYA sa lugar na kinikilala nilang "impyerno."

kanina, isa ako sa mga nagbukas ng isang mall sa Manda. inutusan kase ako ni boss na mamili ng something para sa ilang kaibigan sa media. habang nagmi-meeting sya dun sa tanggapan ng aming PR agency, ako naman, naglilibot sa mall. sa dalawang oras na nakalaan sa akin, hindi ako makapili ng bibilhin para sa dalawang lalaki at isang babae. sabi ni boss, pwede namang unisex gift ang bilhin. nagbigay pa ng ilang "generic" media tokens na pwede ko ring bilhin: kape, o alak. pero alinman sa dalawa, hindi ko nabili. five minutes bago mag-dalawang oras (halos), bitbit ko na ang cupcake pastries na naka-kahon at 3 parker pens. fail daw ang food sabi ni boss. paano nga naman kung wala yung pagbibigyan ko, eh di maghihintay pa ng isa o higit pang araw yung pagbibigyan ng token? paano yung pastry? baka masira. sayang. OK. lesson learned. may next time pa naman (yata) ulit :D
pagbalik namin sa opis, takbo naman sa judging ng art contest. iniwan ko rin dahil kailangan namang mag-ikot sa media friends... di ba nga kaya may "tookens" na pinamili? so ayun. natapos naman nang maaga ang pag-iikot at saka bumalik sa opisina para tapusin ang unfinished business(es).
after office, excited ako. nabigyan kase kami ng invites para sa press screening ng Dance of the Steelbars. pagkatapos ng palabas, naki-kumusta ako sa mga kakilala sa dating pinaglingkurang network. at sa pag-uwi, isa na naman ako sa nagsara (naman) ng mall. mall rat lang?

the long wait is over. the arranged surprise party for Papa's 60th birthday was a success, and it could have been a bigger success if the thirteen guests who confirmed their attendance were able to make it. nonetheless, the celebrator was teary-eyed with the surprise party and the surprise guests--- his old pals from where he used to work. the afternoon party was a blast and i'm giving my very own wifey the credit for coordinating the occasion. also, many thanks to good pal, k3rwin who's always ready to be our official photographer for special occasions such as this.

She enjoyed the movie. I was paying more attention to her reaction than to the film. And it's a delight to see your little one already appreciating the films she like on a wide screen. yay!
Anyway, i also got a good glimpse of the film and the 3rd installment should be the most adventurous among the three. I really like the part when Sai-mohn turned to See-mohn and being the 'temporary' character that he was, is simply hilarious! with this being realized, i now wonder what's next in line for our family-movie date... and when shall it be?
for the meantime, it's IMPEACHMENT fever in manila. This is going to be a VERY busy week.
it's already past halfway of the year (and this month is already past halfway, too.) haven't been able to update much due to unknown reasons. haha. well, perhaps my writing enthusiasm has lessen. it's ironic because i write for a living.
july has always been a busy month for me, in time for our church's anniversary. and we'll be more excited for the next three years when the church will celebrate it's centennial anniversary. i've heard about the church's BIG projects that are being prepared in time for the year 2014--- when it reaches its 100th year. i'm excited to witness that graceful day and i'm sure all the brethren are, too. :D
on another note, this month offers the FINAL installment of the harry potter series and all wizard fans are excited. it has been a decade when the first of its installment was shown on the big screen and who would have thought that it has been that long? i'm not a die hard fan of harry potter (especially the book) but i admit i got hooked into watching its film series unlike any other series such as star wars or those dc comics stories turned into movies (x-men?) but wifey & i must wait after two weeks to watch this finale.
my daughter got sick (again) and never have i panicked been worried before like this recent sickness. first, it was her first time to get a series of cbc to check on her dropping platelet. we first suspected (but never hoped) it was dengue. for four days her fever won't leave her and she's beginning to lose weight already for not having the normal appetite when chow time comes. we also had her urinalysis and it was cleared. thank God it's not that U.T.I. again that brought her twice to the hospital. we decided to have her confined (as suggested by her pediatrician) and my 2nd worry... i don't have our health card anymore! so just imagine where i'd be pulling those money to cover the hospital & medication expenses when our credit card has already been maxed out. and i haven't been voluntarily contributing to Philhealth after i resigned from the previous company. for a while i felt like i'm Atlas--- "pasan ko ang daigdig." good thing it wasn't dengue. she had rashes all over body but it wasn't actually measles. final diagnosis: viral infection. after two nights at the hospital, we were set free. my little girl's appetite got back to normal. and she craved for apples and grapes everyday. yaiks!
i'd like to thank our good blogger friend, Mr. Blogger Congeniality himself--- gasolinedude for inviting us over for a KTV lunch date. yeah. we were supposed to sing our hearts out but Redbox was fully booked, and all other KTVs in Timog area were still closed. and since we can't stay long due to other "appointments", we just had our lunch at Little Asia. the time was short but it was worthwhile. he gave freebies for the wifeys and i discovered that he is hesitant to carry little kids. :P thanks, Alex! looking forward to your next homecoming... and i hope you've made your most important decision when that time comes. you know my personal opinion on that, buddy! :)
another good friend had his homecoming, this time from the kingdom of saudi arabia. he invited us for an eat-all-you-can lunch at DADS, and we sure stuffed our tummy with food! i've learned that edmark is not returning to saudi but instead, he's got a new job offer in Singapore. he's blessed! he's kind-hearted, that's why. he never fails to get in touch with his friends and even thoughtful enough to give everyone their pasalubong. edmark was supposed to stay here in Manila for a month vacation but his employer in SG needs him in two weeks time, so he has to cut short his Manila stay. but the advantage of working in SG is that he's nearer from Manila and vacationing shouldn't be an issue whenever he wants. good luck on your career's new chapter, bro! ;)
on a completely different note, i've activated mg Google+ profile. will this put an end to FB just like what FB did to Friendster? i've read somewhere that Google+ is more of a threat to twitter than FB. we'll see...
bata pa lang ako, paborito ko nang game show ang The Price Is Right na noo'y hino-host pa ng sikat at iginagalang na si Bob Barker. natutuwa kase ako sa mga game segments at lalo naman akong natutuwa kapag ako mismo ay nakakahula nang tama sa mga presyo na dapat hulaan sa laro.
isa pang magandang aspeto ng game show na ito, lahat ng audience ay pwedeng maging contestant... hindi mo alam kung matatawag ka. 'ika nga, meron element of surprise. surprise na parang nagbukas lang yung isang "pintuan" ng pa-premyo at sasabihing maaari kang manalo ng "a new car!"

it's been a long time since i watched a dvd movie. either i'm too busy with other things, or i'm too tired to finish one. but last night after going out with my dear wifey, the couch was inviting me to lie down and view one dvd title. since ayapot's grandma was in our place last night, they all had to share the room and i was reunited with my favorite couch (later on, wifey slept in the playroom instead). so i chose among the many dvd titles compiled in our dvd case, and thought about watching a film that will keep me awake in that wee hours of the day. so i grabbed the dvd with a (somehow) scary photo cover and read the title: Case 39. lead star Renee Zellweger played the role of a devoted family services specialist whose life took a twist and turn when she decided to get personally involved with her job. this film is not actually a horror film. it's more of a suspense-thriller type. i think its better than those horror flicks that show horrible facial make-ups and ridiculous scenes that are too fictional. while we know that film productions mostly are fiction, it always feels good if we can relate the plot in real life--- it's possibility happening and how you will do should you be in that situation. anyway, the film is good, for me, and it's one of the many suspense-thriller type of films i've seen that i liked.
speaking of dvd titles, wifey & i purchased a few for this coming weekend when everyone seems to be on vacation somewhere else, we'll be staying at home doing dvd marathon. have a safe weekend, everyone!

i'm a fan of disaster movies. some people may be scared watching this type of films but i always am excited to see a production whenever there is a screening. i've watched a good number of disaster movies and just today, wifey & i went early to the movie house to catch the first hour screening of the movie 2012. many seemed to like the movie but honestly, for me, i felt the production was not that very good. special effects are awesome, though. maybe (and again) i had high expectations with the movie so when i finally saw it, i was like looking for more. i just feel that the movie was too cinematic. the director (or producer perhaps) could have opted for a more realistic approach, given that their plot was founded on the on-going debate about the world's end in the year 2012. i just couldn't buy the many scenarios shown in the film. too artificial. it was the 2nd time i felt the same when (again) Mr. Emmerich released The Day After Tomorrow production. the scenes may be "cool" to watch but its reality is highly doubted. viewers of both films may think in the end though and ask "yeah, what if it happens soon?" but then, even if we started experiencing abnormal climate behavior we picture how they were presented in both films: how do we arrive at that point, when for example, there will be a sudden drop of temperature that a jetplane / helicopter engine freezes in a split second causing it to crash? or large cities can get swallowed up by an earthquake just like godzilla eating a banana? And does it always follow that lead casts in the movie are always survivors?
Dante's Peak may be one of the many disaster movies that i liked. i can't stress out that the scenes looked artificial (although they are unreal). its production justified the whole movie setting, it blended with the story, the characters were defined and the script was simple yet interesting. veteran actor pierce brosnan played the role of a volcanologist who was assigned to investigate activity going on in the Northern Cascades region near the town of Dante's Peak. the film was said to be somewhat based on the real-life eruptions of Mount St. Helens in 1980 and Mount Pinatubo in 1991 contrary to my liking of Dante's Peak, another volcano-related disaster movie added to my not-so-impressive-disaster-movie list. its title, as if claimed exclusivity, is Volcano. it's all about having a volcano under a big city which the city residents discovered later on when signs of volcanic activities were already being experienced. can i just say, whatthe? and its effects aren't that excellent either.
two different focuses are offered by these two disaster movies: Twister gives us the story two groups battling out to be the first to introduce a warning device/system that will enable man to anticipate tornadoes on an earlier time before they create damages. not only the twister effects in the movie will catch a viewers attention but also the "twist" of the story that surely made the film more interesting. on the other hand, The Perfect Storm gave the fishermen a hard time in breaking their "streak" of bad luck in catching fish. the suspense part of the film may be a bit lacking and excitement was not distributed in the entirety of the production. this film was based on a true story and possibility of happening isn't really far from reality. the film also gave its audience a sneak peak of the "lives" of the fishermen--- in spite of danger, they will work for a living.
going deeper inside the earth, The Core gives a different approach to a disaster movie: a group of people has to penetrate the earth's "inside" to reactivate the core. some parts of the film may be dragging but the whole production made up for it when the mission down to the earth's core was launched. amazing script. if the scenario becomes possible, i wonder though if mankind can come up with the same solution and if sending a "special" ship into the earth's core is feasible.
from the core of the earth, two promising disaster movies attempted showing how life on earth can end due to collision from an asteroid. star-studded film Armageddon showcased a group of oil drillers, claimed to be the world's best, sent up to the outer space to anticipate the collision. their mission: land on the asteroid, drill a hole, drop a nuclear bomb into the hole, then take off and remotely detonate the bomb. this is how the film production presented its solution of saving the earth should a scenario such as that happens. Deep Impact film production decided to give a more emotional touch on the same scenario, this time a comet hitting the earth. a crew of astronauts was dispatched to the outer space to destroy the comet while people on earth are aware of what is in store for them. the film does not end with one mission, it strove hard to keep the story flowing by creating conflicts on its storyline. audience watching this film will not fail to empathize when the last resort to survival was announced--- the choosing of the 800,000 people that may enter the shelter to survive the "impact".

i'm not really a fan of either SOP or especially ASAP but one time while wifey was tuned in to SOP when we were preparing for our church obligations, this Sayawone episode had my eyes glued on the boob tube for almost 5 minutes. The SOP gang performed a nice dance choreography of Ne-yo's MAD. too bad LJ had to ruin it by fixing her hair at the end of the production number. unprofessionalism much. :P but anyway, the over-all performance of the group was, for me, a WOW. video credit goes to Youtube user astigtey

Cartoons are kids number one entertainment (well at least in our time) and cartoon shows are almost countless from generations. and so i took this Facebook quiz(?) and came up with these favorite picks (among the hundreds of them that i watch in my childhood days), in the best five order according to my favorite:
5) Bugs Bunny - a production of Looney Tunes, the wit of carrot-lover Bugs never fails to amuse me. "What's up, doc?"--- his favorite tagline. Bugs rivalry with Sam is a classic and the former always outwit the latter. while the main character in this cartoon has a rivalry of his own, Looney Tunes also showcase two equally entertaining rivalries: Tweety *vs* Sylvester--- where the famous tweety line "i tot i tow a putty cat (i thought i saw a pussy cat)" can be heard, and the run-and-catch classic between the Road Runner and the Coyote.
4) He-Man & The Masters Of The Universe - "by the power of grayskull"... this line makes the he-man HE-MAN including his scared-ey pet that turns into a brave animal. i know i loved this cartoon series and get amused by the trasformation of the main "stars" of the show--- from weakling to powerful. well, not that really weak but it's just like the other superheros that need to transform before facing the opponents. i remember having a He-Man toy which i got from a chocolate drink way back then. it's complete with the accessories except that it didn't come up with the tiger.
3) Voltron - after Voltes V, this robot should be my next favorite. the robot is formed by five different-colored lions: Blue lion, Red lion, Yellow lion, Green lion and Blanc lion. this makes the robot's multi-colored look amusing. but unlike the legendary Voltes V, it has less weapons, it's story is not that dramatic, and it suffered from the comparison against the numerous robot-heroes that made it to the boob tube first: Voltes V, Daimos, Mazinger-Z... to name a few. but nonetheless, Voltron gave entertainment to kids when the former robots vanished on TV screens. as the head lion commands: "form feet and legs... form arms and body... and i'll form--- the head!" the full robot comes to life!
2) Superfriends - this is one of my best favorites among my favorites. a collection of popular superheroes gathered together in a "hall of justice" to fight "evil enemies". the big monitor tells the superfriends where the trouble is and one by one they dispatch themselves to fight the "legion of doom". today, the Superfriends have been "revived" and tranformed into the "Justice League". While i should be overjoyed about this, i think it has undergone a BIG change. even my favorite Green Lantern who used to be white has transformed into black. then doing some research, i found out that there are many versions of the Green Lantern. Go, power ring!
1) Voltes V - no kid of the 70's and 80's do not know Voltes V. perhaps even kids of the 90's. this cartoon series must be the cream of the crop. it's classic story not only limits the plot into non-stop fight with it's enemy but it also touches a family-related story that makes it number one in its generation. an information from wikipedia relates to us the plot of this classic cartoon series: An armada of horned humanoid aliens known as Boazanians invade earth and launch their "beast fighters" all over the world, defeating most of the world's armed forces including the US military. Their first humiliating defeat by Super Electromagnetic Machine, Voltes V brings the invaders to focus their attacks on Japan. Voltes V was designed by Prof. Kentaro Gō (Dr. Ned Armstrong), his wife Prof. Mitsuyo Gō (Dr. Mary Ann Armstrong) and their trusted colleague, Prof. Hamaguchi (Dr. Richard Smith) and built by large scale construction effort backed by United Nations Earth Defense Force and General Oka (Commander Robinson). Voltes V is piloted by five "Volt Machines" that comprise the robot, and are themselves piloted by Ken'ichi (Steve), Daijiro (Big Bert), and Hiyoshi (Little John): the three sons of Kentaro and Mitsuyo Gō, along with the only daughter of General Oka; Megumi (Jamie), and Ippei Mine (Mark), an orphan cowboy.
Voltes V's home base is Camp Big Falcon, a fortress situated on a bird-shaped island along the coast of Japan. Voltes V's enemies are the Boazanians; namely Prince Heinell (Prince Zardos), Katharine (Zandra), Jangal (Draco), and Zuhl. The series focuses on the struggle against Boazan invaders, and vthe Gō brothers' search for their long-lost father, Kentarō Gō. As the series progresses, four major characters--Prof. Mitsuyo Gō, Zuhl, General Oka and Prof. Hamaguchi--die. Zuhl and Hamaguchi are replaced by Belgan and Prof. Sakunji (Dr. Hook), respectively. Later in the series, the brothers learn of their unique heritage of being half Boazanian. The characters deal with their identity's impact on their own lives and that on both their close friends and bitter enemies.
