We had a lot of fun at Uptown Jungle, but unfortunately, the fun came crashing down, literally, as we were
leaving. My Grandma, who was still staying with us, came with us but was
just hanging out in the lounge area reading a book. As we were putting
our shoes back on, Madison ran to tell her that we were ready to leave.
As my Grandma stood up, she lost her balance and fell onto the floor.
Madison ran back to me screaming that something had happened and I
quickly ran to the lounge and found her on the floor writhing in pain
and screaming. We knew the damage must be bad and someone had already
called 911. Thankfully, it just so happened that another family from our
ward was there that day as well and I happened to see the husband, who
is the 1st counselor in our ward and is someone I know very well from
working with him in YW, out of the corner of my eye as I ran to the
lounge. I immediately yelled for him to come and he and Jordan were able
to give my Grandma a blessing. After a time, she was loaded into an
ambulance and I rode with her to the hospital while Jordan took the kids
home.
The end of the story is that she broke her arm
in two places, two bones in one ankle and a bone in the other foot. She
ended up having to have surgery on the ankle and was in the hospital and
then a skilled nursing facility for the next 5 weeks. Because she was
here in Arizona with no other family or friends, this meant that the
kids and I spent A LOT of time with her at the facility so she wouldn't
get lonely. I'm so grateful to many friends here who watched my kids at
times so I could take her to the doctor and be with her as much as
possible. I'm also grateful to my kids for being so good while spending
most of their summer cooped up in a hospital room. I'm also extremely
grateful to my Mom and sister, who flew down for a week to take care of
everyone so I could still go to girls camp. Eventually, we were able to
get her transferred home so that Jordan and I could still go on our
cruise, which was a huge blessing. The whole thing definitely made for a
rough ride for me and our family (not to mention my Grandma haha!) but
I'm grateful I was able to be there for her. She has been there for my
through lots of tough times in my life and I loved being able to return
the favor!

Yiker diker
All busted up but still smiling
More bruising
Once she was transferred to the skilled nursing facility and we knew she'd be there several weeks, I made a little kids corner with a blanket and tons of stuff for the kids to do while we visited Grandma. It worked out really well
All the kids drew LOTS of pictures for Great Grandma ... they covered all the walls and all the staff commented on them when they came into the room
Rocking physical therapy
Usually our routine went something like this - I brought the kids over for a couple hours each morning and then went home for lunch and Dirk's nap. Then we came back once Jordan got home and brought dinner (Grandma wasn't a fan of the facility's food). We stayed until bedtime, which included reading our Fablehaven chapter with Grandma each evening.
At first, everyone was worried about the arm. But as time went on, the ankle became more of a concern ...
Dirk loved going for rides in the wheel chair
Post surgery - yummy
