Lotteriinspektionen publishes first licences for re-regulated Swedish market

Swedish gambling regulator – Lotteriinspektionen has this morning announced its first sixteen approved operators, which will be allowed to service Sweden’s re-regulated online gambling marketplace from 1 January 2019.

As anticipated, established Stockholm-listed enterprises’ Kindred Group Plc, Betsson AB and LeoVegas AB feature on Lotteriinspektionen approved list.

In a statement released this morning, Kindred Group confirmed that it had secured approval to operate the following domains; unibet.se, mariacasino.se, storspelare.se, bingo.se, igame.se

“Today is a historic day for Kindred. We have been pushing for a modern and sustainable gambling market in Sweden from the very start of Unibet in 1997, in which the focus is on consumer protection and harm minimisation”, commented Henrik Tjärnström, Group CEO of Kindred Plc

Meanwhile, Stockholm incumbent Betsson AB has moved to confirm that it will operate three brands, consisting of flagship Betsson and NordicBet (Sportsbook) and SverigeAutomaten (slots) establishing its new home market profile.

“It is good that Sweden opens up the gaming market for free competition in a controlled environment. We look forward to operating on our Swedish home market as a recognised operator on equal terms,” added Betsson CEO Pontus Lindwall.

State-owned gambling asset – Svenska Spel has been approved services for betting, lotteries and online casino is accompanied by national racing firm AB TRAV operating its atg.se domain.

European incumbents are represented by German bookmaker Interwetten Sports, alongside GVC Holdings’ bwin and partygaming (poker + bingo) domains securing licenses.

In addition, the first set of licensee instalments, feature a UK presence with leading online bookmaker bet365 securing its Lotteriinspektionen approval from sportsbook and gaming, joined by Sunderland online gaming group Tombola (bingo/games).

This November, Lotteriinspektionen executives provided a public stakeholder update, detailing the changes the regulatory body expects to undertake once Sweden’s re-regulated gambling framework is established.

Changes for Lotteriinspektionen include a rebrand to Spelinspektionen (translation – ‘The Gambling Inspectorate’), with the regulator expecting to increase its resources and capacities significantly.

“This is a historic day. I am very proud that the Lotteriinspektionen’s staff under severe pressure, with a whole new legislation, worked out the first license decisions,” said Camilla Rosenberg, director general of the Lotteriinspektionen.

Interwetten signs Czech ice hockey club sponsorship deal

Following its recent sponsorship of La Liga side Sevilla FC, Interwetten has confirmed that it will also become the official sponsor of Czech Republic ice hockey club HC Sparta Prague.

Interwetten said that the sponsorship deal will help to increase the company’s presence in the Czech sports betting market, where it has been in operation since the start of the year.

HC Sparta Prague was founded in 1893 as AC Královské Vinohrady and is one of the most successful clubs in Czech ice hockey history. Currently playing in the Czech Extraliga, the team plays its home games in Tesla Arena, which is the second largest hockey stadium in the Czech Republic with a capacity of nearly 14,000 spectators.

Under the agreement, the company will have a brand presence at the Tesla Arena stadium in the form of advertising hoardings, as well as advertisements on videos around the stadium and a banner on the club’s official website.

In addition, Interwetten customers will now be able to exchange Club Points in the Interwetten Club for VIP tickets for every home tie and other gifts goodies from HC Sparta Prague.

Interwetten inaugurates business-to-business division

Online sportsbook operator Interwetten Group has announced the launch of a business-to-business division that is set to market its own ‘white-label’ sportsbetting solution to customers around the world.

The Austrian firm stated that the formation of its new Sportsbook Software AG subsidiary has been in the works since the start of the year and revealed that its emergence in order to market its own software developed in-house will not affect players at its Interwetten.com online platform.

As part of a restructure, Interwetten also announced that Chief Financial Officer Rita Landauer has been promoted to serve as Chief Executive Officer for both Sportsbook Software AG and its parent firm. It stated that the 35-year-old has occupied a management position at Interwetten since 2006 and has also held senior roles with Ankerbrot AG and Denzel AG and. She is set to take over from Wolfgang Fabian, the founder of Interwetten, after he decided to step back from day-to-day operations.

“Over the last twelve months, we have worked together to create the structure for this step and prepare the systematic handover,” said Fabian.

“I firmly believe that the company is well-positioned and ideally equipped for many further years of success under the leadership of Rita Landauer. I wish her all the best in her new role.”

Interwetten pulls out of online poker

In an effort to concentrate its focus on offering a more attractive range of sports betting, casino and skill games products, Austria's Interwetten has pulled out of the online poker market, delivering its last hand of poker yesterday morning.

In a short statement posted on its site Tuesday, Interwetten said that any players still in possession of poker chips would receive the equivalent value in real money as a credit in their account by midnight Thursday. The company's poker offering had been part of the Ongame network.

The company said that following the closure it would now focus efforts on offering customers an even more attractive range of sports betting, casino and skill games.

Interwetten has already began the process of increasing its brand exposure in Europe, signing a deal last week to become the main sponsor of the Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team, providing the company with a presence on the starting grid for the 2010 MotoGP racing calendar, the premier class of grand prix motorcycle racing.

The company said that the agreement would increase its brand exposure in markets popular with the MotoGP such as Spain, Greece, Germany and Switzerland.
