a mighty fine thing to do

The kids and I were stopping by Target yesterday to get a birthday present for a friend and some Huggies (yet somehow that turned into more than a hundred dollars' worth of stuff). We stopped by Quizno's first (my kids loooove that place). We were having fun, picking out chips and deciding between lemonade and gatorade, giggling at Miles making silly faces. I went to pay for our lunch, when the shy young man behind the register held up a twenty dollar bill and said, to my surprise,

"Um, someone has offered to pay for your lunch."

Me: "What? Really? Who?" as I start blushing and peering around the store. (I blush way too easily.) Let's see, two teenage boys (no), lady and her granddaughter already eating (no), frazzled mother of toddler in front of me (no), dentist and his assistant from the office next door (don't think so).

"Well, who is it?" I said, a bit self-conscious.

"Can't say," he replied, smiling, shaking his head and making change.

"Come on, who is it?"

"Sorry, can't tell you."

"Huh. Um, okay. Wow. Well, I guess I won't take the change, then."

I took the kids over to our table thinking, okay, do I look like I'm having a bad day? No, I'm smiling, I'm wearing a cute skirt, don't look poor, I've got make-up on, the kids are behaving . . . I have my wedding ring on my finger, don't think it's a come-on . . . Wait, is Neal here?

I consulted Audrey while the boys chowed down on turkey & swiss on wheat (it's nice sometimes that she's a semi-grown-up). "Well, that was nice!" she said. We were stumped. I did my best to keep my smile on my face while I ate my sandwich, in case the good deed do-er was watching us. I guess I'll never know who did that for me, but it certainly brightened my day. I ought to try it sometime . . .

Lately, I've felt as though I am in a swirl of sorrow and ache for other people. So many friends and acquaintances are struggling so profoundly and I'm having a bit of "good life guilt." My life is not without problems, but they are so small in comparison. Surely all of our hours of struggle will come, I'm certainly not wishing for it, just praying for those in the middle of their hardest times. This bit of good luck in my day further confirmed my belief that people are good, and even though life can be so difficult, there is always light somewhere.

Any bright spots in your day today?

Love these stories. I am such a believer in acts of random kindness. See how it can make someone's day?

Don't doubt why you were "chosen". Just enjoy the moment then pay it forward.

One of my daily reads discussed and challenged readers to just this thing last week...maybe it's six degrees of separation!

what a great story. sometimes it's these random acts that make life even sweeter. maybe this is your chance to pay it forward.

i'm leaning toward the teen boys. you are pretty cute - and young moms are hot these days.

as for aching for others, i understand. but i also know that your family has had its share of trials over the years. i think sometimes we forget the bad times when we're not having them, which is good. just enjoy for now, because heartache visits us unexpectedly.

How nice of someone to pay for your lunch!! That's wonderful. I think more people need to make little nice gestures like that. Wouldn't the world be a better place? (ok, wow, sorry to come off like a Disney movie or after school special or something--ha!)

I think I'm in that same swirl. You've said what I've been thinking about these last few days too... It makes me more vigilant in counting my blessings, but it is so difficult to not be pulled down by other's sorrow.

My bright spot? Usually comes from my kids. Belly laughs, slobbery kisses, snuggles.

A very timely post for me, as well. It seems like I just keep hearing others' bad news.

I went to Joann's last night and now my mom is sewing for me. Life doesn't get much better than that.

This was a really refreshing post. This was one of the harder weeks in the Walker household, and it has made me stop to remember the good things in my life. Thanks, Leslie

I love stories like that! Jared is good in that way and will do things like occationally pay for the person behind us in the drive- through, but I would never think to do it myself. That had to drive you crazy not knowing who it was.

You and your beautiful children inspired someone to do something kind. Your example was their gift and lunch on them was theirs back to you.

Enjoy it! That a you guys are all super cute...a family that has truly got it going on....hehehe
