El R\u00F3dano nace a una altitud de 2209 m en el glaciar del R\u00F3dano, en los Alpes Lepontinos suizos, en el extremo oriental del Valais. En su curso alto discurre por un valle glaciar entre los Alpes berneses, al norte, y los Alpes valesanos, al sur, hasta desaguar en el lago de Ginebra. Atraviesa el lago y entra en Francia, dando comienzo su curso medio, que corre en direcci\u00F3n general oeste por las estribaciones occidentales de los Alpes, hacia Lyon, la ciudad m\u00E1s grande a lo largo de su curso, donde recibe al Saona, su afluente m\u00E1s largo. Luego fluye hacia el sur, entre los Alpes y el Macizo Central. Es un r\u00EDo muy caudaloso debido a que recibe las aguas de los Alpes, por su margen izquierda, y las del Macizo Central franc\u00E9s y de los Vosgos, a trav\u00E9s del Saona, por la derecha. Su caudal medio anual, medido en Beaucaire, es de 1700 m\u00B3/s, que alcanz\u00F3 el m\u00E1ximo el 4 de diciembre de 2003 con 11 500 m\u00B3/s \u2014se considera una crecida cuando supera los 5000 m\u00B3/s\u2014 de los que se extraen para consumo humano un total anual de 2200 hm\u00B3. Las inundaciones m\u00E1s fuertes han sido las de 1840, 1856 y 2003 con 13 000 m\u00B3/s. El R\u00F3dano es el r\u00EDo m\u00E1s caudaloso de Francia y el segundo de los r\u00EDos que desembocan en el Mediterr\u00E1neo, despu\u00E9s del Nilo (sin considerar los que desaguan en el mar Negro, como el Danubio y el Don). El r\u00EDo en su curso franc\u00E9s ha sido totalmente acondicionado, tanto para la producci\u00F3n de energ\u00EDa el\u00E9ctrica como para evitar inundaciones en \u00E9pocas de crecidas, lo que ha permitido una navegaci\u00F3n segura en gran parte de su curso, con importantes puertos fluviales \u2014Lyon, Valence y Avi\u00F1\u00F3n\u2014 e incluso un servicio de cruceros desde Arl\u00E9s hasta la ciudad de Lyon.
