Mr. Independent at the grocery store

Evan is definitely my child. Stop laughing. He throws a tantrum like you've never seen if I don't let him push the grocery cart. So, Kroger has these little carts that he can actually reach and I thought I'd let him try it out today. Luckily, the store wasn't very crowded, in fact it was pretty empty. Thank goodness! (He also drives like me.)
Just out of curiosity (ok and desperation!), what is your favorite activity to keep your toddler busy/happy/yourself sane?

Bonnes Bouches

Some fun little sandwich-kabobs for activity day treats. Yes I found the idea on Pinterest.com which is an AMAZING site!!!

A few pictures from our quick trip to Idaho.
Evan has this new thing where he would rather push the stroller than ride it. Cute unless we're at the grocery store and he wants to push the cart.
Evan wasn't feeling very well and didn't move from this spot while Mickey Mouse was on.
 Priceless.
And now that I have my phone Evan won't have to talk on a piece of bread. Although I'm sure he'll still try it.
Back to the Houston heat. :P

It's hotter than Houston!

The record in Houston was set in 1980 with 14 consecutive days of temperature in the 3-digits. Monday was the official record breaker! 15 days with 3-digit temperatures. It's now Saturday, 5 days later. According to one news source we've "blown through the record of consecutive 100 degree days". Is there an end in sight? I HOPE SO!!!

Last week we were able to take a little break from the ridiculous heat and visit family in Northern Idaho. Unfortunately, it was a sad occasion, Dylan's dear Grandma passed away. She was so much fun and I'm so glad I had 5 years to get to know her. She loved playing games and taught me how to play Canasta and dominoes (chicken foot). She was also incredibly talented. She was an oil painter and a tole painter and also knit around 300 Christmas stockings for friends and family. Apparently she was an amazing bowler too! After the funeral we shared a table for lunch with her bowling friends who could not stop telling us what an incredible bowler she was and that they didn't just give all those bowling trophies away to anyone like we all thought they did. She couldn't be beat! We will miss her.

The other day when I was talking about what a great cook Dylan's mom is, he said "well she learned from the best!" I'm grateful for the time Jill has taken to teach me a few things. She makes fabulous rolls, and the "prettiest" 7-layer dip ever. Seriously. She taught me last Christmas/New Years her tricks and I put them to use today! It's harder than you think it would be to come up with dinner ideas that don't require heating up of any kind. 7-layer dip is PERFECT. All the food groups in one dish with no heat required! Yeehaw!!!

And yes, I did forget one layer. The green onions before the cheese. But I think we'll survive. So here are the tricks... and I hope I'm not giving away any family secrets! So one of the worst things about 7-layer dip is when you have a big chunk of avocado or tomato or olive that falls off the chip right? All you have to do to remedy that and make the overall dip look better too is to use chopped olives, cut the tomatoes super thin, and grate the cheese with the small grating side of the grater. Funny that I just said that 3 times in a sentence.

What are your favorite meals to eat during the summertime? I need ideas.

Ok, it's all about Evan.

Evan has always loved movin' to the music. So yesterday, we were watching something on TV and he was dancing as usual, but this time he tried a new move. He went up on his toes and was bending his knees and shaking his bum. So cute. I tried getting a video, but you know how it goes. He stops right when the camera is turned on.

I can't believe how fast he is growing up. He's such a good little helper. Like today when he kept grabbing the vacuum from me and pushing me away or tonight when he was trying to get milk out of the fridge, and instead decided he wanted a smoothie. So with one hand holding a bottle of milk, he grabbed the blender with the other. As I saw this happening in slow motion, picturing glass shattering all over the floor and his little toes, my super-human (a.k.a. Mom) powers kicked in and I grabbed the pitcher but not before most of the contents spilled all over the kitchen floor which I had spent all morning cleaning and mopping. *sigh* He knew it was a mess, which Mom doesn't like, so he immediately started wiping what had spilled inside the fridge with his hands. To prevent any further disaster I quickly picked him up and moved him into the family room. He stood there for a second and then made the SADDEST face and started crying like he knew he had done something wrong. So with the fridge open and peanut butter banana smoothie dripping from the lower shelf to the floor, I held him and told him he was a good boy and such a good helper. After a few minutes he calmed down but still wanted to help me. I started wiping the lower shelf with a paper towel and he came over and carefully put his hand on the dry parts of the towel, knowing that I did not want him to get his hands dirty, and slowly tried to wipe the mess. He's just so adorable and it's sad to see him get upset when it's really not a big deal. Poor little guy. I can't wait until he's big enough to really help. I'll be putting him to work!
