Michael The Lion Edits Out Now On Razor-N-Tape

The major labels couldn't back up the presses forever - the Michael The Lion Edits are now available on 12" wherever fine records are sold! This record has a little bit of everything. Any Time is an edit of a loft classic that I did almost five years ago (as DJ Apt One). The Don is an italo/eurodisco joint reminiscent of my RCMP days. Get More is my multi-instrumental hard disco-funk take on a Philly classic (I play 4 guitar lines on it). Lastly 909s And Herb is a little collabo with my man 50 grand Sammy Bananas that has turned into a secret heater in Soul Clap's recent sets. Very excited and very honored to be a part of this label - which boasts a roster of top class editors like Dimitri From Paris, Ron Basejam and DJ Vas. Hope you enjoy - listen below and grab a copy at Juno.

DJ Apt One Live Sets From Pittsburgh, Seattle, SF

Happy to be able to share a live recording of my super late, super deep, super fun set at Hot Mass in Pittsburgh a few months back. This was a truly great and amazing party and I played lots of new Michael The Lion material and old RCMP material.

You may have read that this is one of the country's best and most unique parties (it's in a bath-house). And that is not an incorrect assessment.

Additionally, there are other live recordings from my recent tour dates in Seattle (Jack at The Eagle) and San Francisco (DBJ family's GoBang at The Stud) and a mixtape by Reed Streets I contributed to up on my Soundcloud.

DJ Apt One - White Light 95

As you may remember, I did a mix for the amazing White Light series with RCMP a few years back. I'm very fortunate to have been able to do another, this time as DJ Apt One.

This mix is special for a few reasons. For one, this is the first place you can hear music by my new "alter-ego" Michael The Lion - a remix for Robert Lux and Todd Edwards that will be out this spring. Yes, the house legend, Daft Punk collaborator and Grammy winner Todd Edwards. That guy. This is the first tiny bit of a very big and time-consuming project that will hopefully see the light soon.

More importantly, this mixseries is one of the few that encourages really high-concept musical curation. The guys who run it ask people to emphasize the concepts of light and space into their mixes. My mix with RCMP contained lots of found sound from the 1960s space program and it was designed to evoke feelings of unease. This mix is a bit more terrestrial, but every bit as far-reaching. Here's the blurb I wrote for White Light, followed by the tracklist. You can find a link to the mix at the bottom.

“This mix is a meditation on the seasons and the emotions they evoke. Earth’s orbit and the physical principle of conservation of energy philosophically are at a disconnect with my ideas about life’s linearity. The White Light mix I did with RCMP explored the cold conflict between the technological human and the cosmos. Now, I want to bring things back to Earth and musically detail the more immediate and tangible – the dark and the rosy, as well as the organic. This mix also contains the debut track from Michael the Lion, a new alias of mine. The program is in five movements.”

Tracklisting:

Movement 1 – Snow / Reflections
1. Excerpts from “A Year in the Wilderness”
2. Cocteau Twins – The Thinner The Air
3. The Three Degrees – Collage

Movement 2 – Spring / Storm
4. Yellow Sunshine – All Along the Seashore
5. Curtis Mayfield & The Staples Singers – After Sex
6. Kan Sano – Everybody Loves The Sunshine
7. Burnso – Bad News From the Stars
8. Serge Gainsbourg – Bad News From the Stars

Movement 3 – Dog Days / Introspection
9. DJ Apt One f/ Shadoe – Willing Interlude
10. Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson – Willing
11. Dennis Parker – Like an Eagle
12. Herb Alpert – Rotation

Movement 4 – Autumn / Mercurial
13. Chris Rea – Josephine (Chris Coco Edit)
14. Elyas Khan – Bells (Instrumental)
15. Robert Lux & Todd Edwards – I’ve Still Got Sunshine (Michael the Lion Remix)
16. Kon & The Gang – Sunlight

Movement 5 – Earth / Cycle
17. Earth Wind & Fire – Kalimba Tree (Terje Edit)
18. Lamont Dozier – Going Back To My Roots

RCMP - White Light Mix #63

Paul and I put together an RCMP mix for the White Light Mix Series.  It's a meditation on themes of technological progress and the relative benefits and dangers of advanced technology. You can also dance to it, drive at night to it, and more.

Our mix is a collage of soundtrack and experimental electronic records, modern disco, chillwave sounds and some found footage narration.  We spent a lot of time putting it together, so we hope you'll enjoy it.

We're very honored to be a part of this mix series, which is made up pretty much exclusively of entries by artists I love and respect!  If you aren't familiar with the White Light Mixes, there are great mixes by Optimo, Leo Zero, Maxxi Soundsystem, Alan Braxe, Oliver, Neoteric, Ayres, Catchdubs, Fashen, Plastic Plates, Electric Youth, Cassian, In Flagranti, Gigamesh and many many more in there, so poke around. We're very honored to be involved with this great series!

Find it exclusively at WhiteLightMixes.com

Free Download of RCMP - Love The Music (Fifteenth Remix)

I have a freebie for you from last month's big big RCMP II: The Remixes release.

As many folks are aware, Fifteenth is the dynamite collab between LA's party starter Mike B and long-time Philadelphyinz affiliate Sammy Bananas. Basically it's a dream team, and they make some of the best sample-derived house out there right now, so we were thrilled to have them work on our tune!

Many thanks to the Fools Gold blog for giving the exclusive DL last week.

RCMP II

After two long years, we have finally followed up RCMP I with, you guessed it, RCMP II (hat-tip to Cerrone). Of all the music projects I do, this one is my favorite and the one I am most uncompromising about. I love RCMP like it was my first-born son.

You can buy the record at iTunes, Juno, Amazon, Turntable Lab and more, but those are the easiest places to get it.

We are incredibly proud of this record and we have a great remix EP follow up in a few months with Fifteenth, Pink Skull, Pumpkin Patch, Ayres, Laberge, Burnso, Elvis Suarez and some special secret remixers!

Listen to it all here, and please do buy a song or two or maybe the whole thing! This is how we eat!!

We have a couple of release parties planned, one in Philly, one in Pittsburgh, and then a date in Chicago at After Disco, whose edits have been featured here a few times. We'd love to see you out there!

YR Disco Corner With RCMP, Soidisco & Pumpkin Patch!

We have promotional mixes to get you in the mood for some fantastic releases we have coming out in October. Pumpkin Patch's "Grooveberry Jam" EP comes out October 4th and RCMP "II" comes out October 18th. We also have a new, recently released EP from Solidisco that is sure to tickle the fancy of some DBJ readers.

DJ Pumpkin Patch burst onto the scene with his remix of RCMP's "Mustache Love" - a tune which shot to the top of the charts on Beatport in the spring of 2010. Now, P-Patch takes center stage with the "Grooveberry Jam" EP - a record chock-full of peak-time French Touch bangers that are absolutely certain to rock any party. From the swinging grooves of the title track to the hands-in-the-air banger "Doobie Bras," this is a must-have for any DJ on the scene. Fans of Fred Falke, Justice and Ed Banger records need this in their playlist.

You would not think upstate New York would produce the musical minds behind really fun summery music, but that is exactly the situation with Solidisco's Lovebeat. Buffalo's DJ D.Star and Biacco -- both top-tier club DJ's in their own right -- team up for an EP of tight disco house, combining their love of classic disco with the energy of today's club music. Yearning diva vocals, funky basslines and huge filter builds make the whole EP dancefloor gold that will keep the energy up even at peak time. Perfect for fans for Duck Sauce, Cassius, Bob Sinclair and the like.

We're really excited to have Solidisco on Young Robots can't wait to hear these jams in constant rotation. The EP is out now at all fine digital retailers.

Young Robots Top 10s for Traxsource

The good folks at Traxsource asked Young Robots family to contribute some Top 10 lists recently. Traxsource, along with Beatport and Juno, is one of our preferred spots for buying digital music - good file quality and nice extended mixes for DJs and electronic music heads.

DJ Apt One's TSWP April Top 10

This has been a hell of a month at Elena's in West Philly. JJC and I are rolling with our new Monday and so far it has been a very disco and vocal house affair, thanks to an amazing core crowd, some of whom were deep into the post-Paradise Garage scene in Newark and New York in the 1980s onward.

Tech Support was an incredible affair - the spot was packed to the gills. Kenny Raw played a funk set that pretty much made my jaw hit the floor. I knew maybe a half dozen of his tunes over the course of his set but the crowd was going bananas for it. The night ended with a 10+ minute near-dance-riot to Fela Kuti's Zombie - the bouncer was looking over my shoulder like "when is this song gonna end?" but there was never a good time to fade it out - people were through the roof with every breakdown. God bless West Philadelphia.

We recorded a portion of the night and hopefully I'll be able to post that at some point.

The following is a list of tracks that have been killin it at Elena's over the course of the past month. Most of these are tracks I've been dropping, but there are a few that I've heard Kenny and JJC play, including the numero uno joint - an original tape edit / cover / mashup from the 80s by Clubhouse. I've had some requests to start a TSWP podcast, and if I have time to do that I will, but in lieu of that, here's a list of that good good that's been pumping through the speakers.

With the exception of the Mr. Matawe track and the Clubhouse track, all these songs are easily available for purchase - the older ones through Amazon and the newer ones through Beatport and such. Go grab em, and support great music!

Just a reminder, JJC and I are at Elena's every Monday night, no cover. Tech Support occurs maybe once or twice irregularly throughout the year. Elena's Soul is at 4912 Baltimore Avenue in West Philly. From the other side of the Schuylkill, take the 34 trolley to 49th.

1. Clubhouse - Superstition/Good Times
2. King Britt f/ Byron Stingily - Get Up (King Britt's Old School Dub)
3. Fela Kuti - Zombie
4. Flying Fish - Mr. Matawe
5. Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes - Bad Luck
6. RCMP - Mustache Love (Original Mix)
7. Pirupa - Get Funky
8. Sister Sledge - Lost In Music (12" Mix)
9. DJ Sneak - You Can't Hide From Your Bud (A-Trak Mix)
10. Salsoul Orchestra - Ooh I Love It (Love Break)

Bonus, Number 11:

Young Robots Digital Launches Today with Two RCMP EPs

RCMP - "Mustache Love" (Video by Ghostdad)

BUY - Beatport | TurntableLab | iTunes | Amazon | Juno

Today, Young Robots Records is now animated and in effect - the product of almost a year of hard work. You can now purchase the RCMP self-titled EP and Mustache Love EP at any major digital music retailer.

The self-titled EP is your first chance to buy a digital version of the popular but limited edition vinyl we put out last summer in collaboration with Flamin Hotz Records. One of last year's most buzzed-about disco records, it features remixes from Cousin Cole and DJ Pumpkin Patch. There are a few copies of the vinyl available at Turntable Lab if that's your preferred sonic medium.

DJ and fan response to Mustache Love inspired us to create a remix EP and we tapped Chicago's house wunderkind Rob Threezy (Nightshifters, T&A) for a techy thumper. Young Robots and Philadelphyinz's own Skinny Friedman adds a more percussive, funky vibe with his mix, and Young Robots' rising star DJ Pumpkin Patch extends his EP version to an even more intense, synthed out anthem.

We're really excited that the label is off the ground and running, and we're game planning releases from Skinny Friedman, Relative Q (of RCMP), DJ Apt One, Brooklyn disco wizard DJ Pumpkin Patch, Detroit's number one party mover Frankie Bank$, Dash Speaks and more - not to mention some RCMP releases with remixers that may surprise you.

Long story short - today is the day you can stop just listening to us talk shit and start listening to these records. You can check them out at any major internet music outlet.

Personally, we're fans Beatport and Turntable Lab because of they offer wav files and a record-store-like shopping experience, but iTunes, Amazon, Juno and all the others are just fine with us.

XLR8R Mag's Labels We Love Compilation

We're super excited that XLR8R magazine chose RCMP's Ibiza, PA to be the lead track on Volume 1 of its "Labels We Love" compilation series. Shoutouts to Flamin Hotz, which released the RCMP vinyl, for being such a class act that we got to be involved with this project. The comp is out exclusively on iTunes starting today. Other entries on the record are from L-Vis 1990, Renaissance Man and Marcel Dettmann among others.

Grab it here.

Keep an eye out for the Young Robots digital version of the RCMP EP, dropping on all digital outlets big and small March 9th along with a single for Mustache Love. We just put the new Young Robots label site live, so check it out if you have a chance.

RCMP on Scion Radio

I had the pleasure of doing an interview with Cosmo and Ayres from The Rub. We chopped it up about RCMP, Philadelphyinz, Pittsburghese, our Young Robots label project, the old Paradise at Key West and the brief but spectacular Philly career of DBJ's own Mike Tee.

Relative Q
and I also did a guest mix with lots of disco, new and old. Ayres and Cosmo also mix it up on some old school rap shit.

The show is available only as a live stream right now. You can listen to it at Scion Radio's site OR you can listen with the convenient new player at the top of the sidebar right here on The Doller Ban Jams Internet Website!

Put it on while you're getting your hair braided or having a cocaine-induced midnight house cleaning session.

Tracklist is posted in the comments section.

You can now purchase the self-titled RCMP EP at Turntable Lab (Lab Recommended!) and wherever Flamin Hotz records are sold.

RCMP - Ibiza, PA

This is it - the RCMP record drops this Thursday at Metropolis (more info on that and this weekend's DC and Pittsburgh shows later). Next week the record hits stores.

So we've got a goody for you. Ibiza, PA is, for my money, the biggest dancefloor destroyer on the RCMP EP. I've played this joint all across the country and it never fails to get hands in the air in an epic 4AM on drugs stylee. That's why the track is called Ibiza, PA- it's that rust belt rave shit.

For a better quality copy of the file (or the epic Cousin Cole remix) - buy the record online next week from Turntable Lab or from one of the many record stores which stocks Flamin Hotz fine products. If digital is more your thing, the record will be available on Beatport via our new label, Young Robots, in several months.

Keep a lookout for the forthcoming video for Ibiza, PA by Didier Clain!

Another track from the EP, The Bird AKA Ignition, is also available for free download. You can hear the whole EP by downloading the RCMP promo mix.
