A Gem from the US Health Department

The proposal, which circulated in the department on Monday, says the new requirement is needed to ensure that federal money does not “support morally coercive or discriminatory practices or policies in violation of federal law.” The administration said Congress had passed a number of laws to ensure that doctors, hospitals and health plans would not be forced to perform abortions.

In the proposal, obtained by The New York Times, the administration says it could cut off federal aid to individuals or entities that discriminate against people who object to abortion on the basis of “religious beliefs or moral convictions.”

So in other words, it's okay to discriminate against women because of YOUR religous beliefs. Did they miss all the rulings from the Supreme Court regrading the separation of Church and State or the part where you can't discriminate based on gender? Oh wait, Shah, it's only a piece of paper.

The proposal defines abortion as follows: “any of the various procedures — including the prescription, dispensing and administration of any drug or the performance of any procedure or any other action — that results in the termination of the life of a human being in utero between conception and natural birth, whether before or after implantation.”

Nice. So women do not deserve birth control pills or the right to determine what's best for their bodies. Talk about a step backwards.

What's next? Women can't be construction workers, or navy pilots, or race car drivers? Are we going to be forced to accept our true place in society?!??! Shall we go ahead and rename this country? How about, The United States of Gilead. Maybe Margaret wasn't too far off and maybe one day it won't be just fiction.

So women: WAKE UP! Or our daughters will grow up in a much much different world.

Ant Attack.

In between fingers, up and down her legs (left leg and right hand got it the worst), poor Squishy Baby is eaten up with ant bites. Little creeps crawled up through playground equipment to get her. She was pulled out of the play tube as soon as they heard the crying, and she was promptly transfered to a sink. Where, of course, the ants were removed, clothing removed, baby hosed down and happy again, as she is a total waterbaby and that was the ultimate distraction she needed. When I arrived, the swelling was already going down, Daddy came in behind me and dosed her with Benadryl, just in case of a reaction.

I counted 49 bites on the right hand, and lost count somewhere around 75 on the left leg. Needless to say, that's still A LOT and we're trying to keep her from playing with the resulting vesicles.

And she adores it. She rides front wards, backwards, sideways, but not yet upside down. PLUS, as a bonus, she's figured out how to ring the bell.

Father's Day, a big hit.

After almost a year of stuffing Squishy Baby into the Bjorn, Daddy got an Ergo for Father's Day. A front, hip or back carrier, the Ergo is well loved by SB, who after a half hour of riding along with her Daddy, fell sound asleep.

Docs to Women: Pay No Attention to Ricki Lake's Home Birth

When healthy women are supported this way, 95% give birth vaginally, with hardly any intervention.

And yet, the American Medical Association doesn't see the point. Yesterday at its annual meeting it adopted a policy written by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists against "home deliveries" and in support of legislation "that helps ensure safe deliveries and healthy babies by acknowledging that the safest setting for labor, delivery, and the immediate post-partum period is in the hospital" or accredited birth center.

"There ought to be a law!" cry the doctors.

The trouble is, they have no evidence to back up their safety claims.

Sigh. Until the medical community and legislators WAKE UP to the fact that I am a person, with my own brain, and that I'm am perfectly capable of reading medical studies and deciding for MYSELF what the risks are with regards to my medical choices, there will NOT be equality for women.

I did NOT home birth because of celebs, I did NOT home birth because it's cool, I did NOT home birth because I had something to prove, I did NOT home birth because I'm better than you.

I gave birth at home because after months of reading books and studies, and after my experiences in a clinical setting with prenatal care (white coat hypertenion ensuing), it was the right choice for me and the Bean. She was a six minute shoulder dystcoia and I still have no doubts that having her at home was the best choice. I gave her the gentlest birth possible and have a healthy, happy, thriving one year old. It's a choice that I would make again.

It's a choice I want preserved for my daughter.

I don't have a baby

I have a very, very hungry caterpillar. For dinner last night she ate:
spare ribs
mac & cheese
watermelon
some pizza
some banana (she begged from someone)
a few bites of the chocolate cream pie
and then half an apple.

Not to mention the nursing she did both before and after her feast. LOL.

There is a stigma that you all have had to unfairly deal with. At the very least you have had a mother-in-law, family member, friend or even husband, negatively comment on your sleeping arrangement with your child. That was bad enough. There is a bigger problem on the horizon however. That very special parenting choice that you had the instinct to make is now being considered “NEGLECT” by public health officials and may someday be illegal. Either way, that choice needs to become a part of something bigger now, and can no longer go unnoticed. This number will give solace and choice to women who respond to this very basic parenting instinct, like you have.

Interestingly enough, much of the organized negativity comes from crib manufacturers. They are probably scorned about your original choice not to use their product.

Some people are saying that co-sleeping and bed-sharing causes SIDS.

SIDS organizations are endorsing media that intends to confuse SIDS deaths with co-sleeping/bed-sharing. Why are SIDS organizations expanding their mission statements to include “all infant deaths”? The purpose of a SIDS organization should be to support those who have been affected by SIDS. They should embrace the common factors found in properly diagnosed SIDS deaths, champion the scientific efforts to end SIDS, and tirelessly be working to put themselves out of business. They should stay away from co-sleeping where SIDS does not happen. Co-sleeping deaths are due to positional and accidental asphyxiation, not SIDS.

Racism in America is caused primarily by black Chicago preachers.

The guy who keeps getting confused over the relationship between Iraq, Iran, and al Qaeda is the foreign policy expert.

The guy who goes to campaign stops on his wife's private jet aircraft is the most down-to-earth.

The guy who changed his stance on tax cuts, Roe v. Wade, immigration, gun control, the confederate flag, torture, public financing, and his own anti-earmark rhetoric is the "straight talker".

People in the heartland don't like it when you call them bitter, but they do like it when you explain to them that they're too dumb to understand issues more important than whether or not they like to be called bitter.

Arugula is the measure of a man.

Bowling is the measure of a man.

Orange juice is the measure of a man.

Flag pins are the measure of a man.

Success in Iraq consists of any reduction in violence, except when violence increases that's good too.

A recession is only a recession if you call it one.

Bill Kristol, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Karl Rove, Maureen Dowd, David Brooks, David Broder, Charles Krauthammer and Bob Novak are all intensely interested in giving advice to the Democratic candidates because they just want to be helpful.

Blind Patriotism and/or Forced Patriotism are not a good measure for leaders or citizens of a country. It's never done any favors for Europe.

A citizen who runs for President MUST love his/her country as no other average citizen would put up with or want to deal with this kind of abuse.
