Monday Confession: Tricks of Avoidance

Do you ever get to a point where you don't want to talk to anyone? I do.

And, if you know me really well you know that I can get agitated in large crowds, am sound sensitive, allergic to chaos, easily distracted and often annoyed.

How do I manage? Well, I'll share one trick with you today.

Ear buds. Head phones. Cans. Put them in/on and you are home free.

I like music a lot. It's saved my life a few times. I listen to music as much as I can and especially when I can't take listening to the outside world any more. Lately, I've been listening to music at work much more than I used to. I share an office so I have to wear ear buds in order to listen at the volume that I like but I also wear them to drown out the noise. Where I work I am in charge of nearly all the writing/editing that goes into most of our company and client websites, videos, audio and presentations. Have you ever tried to write while you can hear two different speaker phone calls, four BYU sport discussions and a heated client argument happening at the same time? It's difficult.

Now, I just plug in and write away. But I have to confess that sometimes even music is distracting. So when the office is quiet enough for me to write but I can't afford to be distracted for the 50th time that day, I simply put my ear buds in and don't turn anything on. It looks like I can't hear anything and that I'm super immersed and, for some reason, people don't want to bother a man with headphones on. It works out great and I get more done. Win, win.
