You MUST read this book!
A great friend of mine recommended this book to me (and we're reading it later this year for book club too) and I just finished it....this goes on my top ten list for best & must-read books!
The author through her own research and work as a psychologist determined that people generally fall within 2 different kinds of mindsets: the fixed mindset and the growth mindset. I referred to this in my talk (so if you read that and it sounds familiar, that's why!)
Anyway...you'll have to read it to get the full meat and message out of the book but I can tell you it has changed the way I perceive my own life & challenges and the way I teach my children. There is so much of gospel truth in it as I relate the thoughts and ideas in the book to that which is taught in the scriptures regarding our eternal growth and progression and the way we treat our fellow brothers and sisters.
Here's one little excerpt from the book that I really liked about John Wooden and his amazing career as a coach:
"Wooden is not complicated. He's wise and interesting, but not complicated. He's just a straight-ahead growth-mindset guy who lives by this rule: 'You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better.'"He didn't ask for mistake-free games. He didn't demand that his players never lose. He asked for full preparation and full effort from them. 'Did I win? Did I lose? Those are the wrong questions. The correct question is: Did I make my best effort?' If so, he says, 'You may be outscored but you will never lose.'"
I had to wait for a few months on a waiting list at the library to finally check the book out but it was totally worth the wait. I'm thinking about just buying a copy for my personal library. So, so good!
