Last summer when we were driving home from Logan, we stopped at a random gas station somewhere in the middle of Idaho. We went inside the little store and the kids found the mother-load of TY stuffed animals. Since we were all bored, we let them pick one out. Austin picked out a cat (which Christian long-ago claimed for his own), we picked out a cute turtle for Christian (which Nathan has since claimed), and Nathan picked out this florescent orange fish that was sort of ball-shaped.
Nathan named his fish "Blub-Blub" and we had no idea how important Blub-Blub would become. Instantly, there was a whole story behind Blub-Blub including his fish-species, which he invented. Blub-Blub is a Dianagalorox fish. When he first started talking about this, I thought maybe it was a real kind of fish he had read about in a book, but no, the word and everything about it came out of his imagination.
Since Nathan started playing video games like Super Mario Brothers, he now loves to create his own video games and he draws the levels on paper. He can talk about these made up video games for hours, and I confess that I am often bored to tears (video gams just aren't my thing). He has created exciting games such as Super Mushroomy Brothers, Super Pea-Pea (after the pea shooter in Plants vs. Zombies), and his favorite game: Blub-Blub Brothers and Super Blub-Blub Brothers (he has another red fish similar to Blub-Blub that I bought for him during his last hospital stay at the Children's gift shop that he named Super Blub-Blub because it has a mask and is sparkly - it is quite the fish).
He and Austin play with their fish frequently (of course we had to get Austin a fish of his own to play the game - his fish is named Bubbles).
Anyway, at school, Nathan's class spent a couple of months working on a fiction unit in writer's workshop. He wrote "chapters and chapters" of the Adventures of Blub-Blub. His teacher's comment about his writing was that "it's very obvious he must read a lot of books and that you have read him a lot of books." Yes. He is a voracious reader.
His writing is pretty cute. I'm pretty sure I wasn't writing like this until at least 3rd grade. Here is a picture of his character guide and also a sample page of his book. I should mention that Blub-Blub's power is shooting electricity.
